Seems like trading stuff these days is getting out of hand.It comes with Craigslist crowd for the most part. All anybody wants to do is trade off there junk.A guy I know is a good one for getting rid of his garbage this way.Plus they always want the better end of the deal.I only ever traded once and got burned. So that doesn't help either.Worst part was from a guy who I have helped in the past.Don't worry I will get even someday.Think we need to go back to paying for stuff.

I've never done a trade, but it all boils down to knowing what you're trading and making sure the trade is fair or leans in your favor.
I would never trade a running machine (ATV, sled, car, etc) for one that didn't run but "ran fine last year when I parked it". Anything mechanical would have to be tested. Run, driven, shot or whatever, unless I could see what was wrong right off the bat. Hell, even when you buy something that runs you can come across things you weren't told about that can turn the deal sour.
Nobody has spare cash on hand and won't take the time to sell their junk. I have done some great trades in the past that both parties were happy with, but I also do my research and chose wisely who I do business with.

I've got a simple solution. Don't trade if you don't like trading.

I have done some trading with people I found on CL. Guess it just comes down to making sure you are informed. I never ever take anyone's word on CL.

To be honest the only reason I can see to trade is if you are getting a better deal at least in your eyes, unless of course you both have exactly what the other wants.

I don't think Jay is saying trading is bad, but when you try to sell something and are bombarded with nothing but trade offers it gets very irritating very fast. Its not a matter of being "informed", its a matter of the difference between selling something for cash or trading your crap for someone else's crap. Each has its place and if you are into trading, so be it. But if you list something for "sale" to gain cash while losing stuff, being offered more stuff instead of cash is not to appealing and gets down right annoying.

You poor guys. Have you ever used CL before? Yes you say? Then you should know the ropes. How annoying is it to delete an email? If you are so bothered don't use CL or just don't put your phone number in the ad. The idea that you can put your ad for some POS you are trying to sell in front of millions of people for free is pretty amazing.

C'mon now!! Let's not bring common sense into this!! That would make it too easy.
If Jay was talking about people offering trades when he lists a "For Sale" ad, he should have said that. His post appears more to be a complaint about trading in general, as opposed to "I'm sick of losers offering me trades for my stuff instead of just wanting to buy it"
If indeed that is the problem, I have found it effective to post in caps "NO TRADES"
Proper terminology is the key to effective communication ;)

I am sick of the losers offering me there junk.Plus sick of all anybody wants to do is trade.Mostly because there stuff isn't worth what they want.Seems nobody wants to buy.I use Craigslist all the time with success. So I do know how to place my adds to save myself some grief.Doesn't matter they will still offer you something in trade.I always made out showing up with cash in hand. Also I save up or sell before buying.Everybody is big wheeler and dealer without a bank account to back them up.

Wow! That takes care of everything! The issue is deffinently not more complex than that. Thanks for being so smart and helping out. Its great that everyone is upfront about wanting to just trade right at the beginning, that makes everything easier, Why didn't I see that. Oh BTW, I found my delete button so my problems of wasted time and rearraning my schedule to meet these "buyers" that turn into traders, are all solved now. What would I have done without your informative post?

I'm glad that works for you and others, but I've found that posting "NO TRADES" is about as effective as posting no spam or spammers.

I'm sure it doesn't work for everyone. Maybe it's your part of the country? I've never had a trade offer. Although I've been offered millions of dollars from a few foreign countries and dignitaries and enough deals on viagra and cialis to keep the entire military at full salute until 2056.

I think trading is a lot of fun. Ive been doing it for years and have owned tons and tons of ATV's and bikes, and a few trikes. some cars too. people cant believe what I get sometimes. I trade up all the time, but make sure the other person knows what they are getting. Sadly, I got burned recently on my 200x. It would run fine until it warmed up, so it seemed great during the test ride, but sure enough it shits out on you after it warmed up. I bought a new CDI and coil and 80 bucks later its good. I traded a ready to ride 98 CR 125 with a bunch of extras and some motor work for my 200X.

I have traded successfully before and it can be very rewarding. It did take 2 months to find something I was willing to trade for. I traded a car for a truck. no cash. Both parties need to be happy with it!. simple as that.

I've done lots of trading. Most of the time it works out but I think I got the short end twice. And both of those were bikes I was told ran but when we met up it just wouldn't happen to start. I did get them running but it they were just always tough to start, I sold them both for less than what I think the stuff I traded was worth. Never do that again. One of them was a KLR600 then I saw it on craigslist months later with the engine pulled for low compression. Explains the hard starting. I only sold it for $300.
I think one of my better trades was trading my 1980 ATC110 that someone spray painted green for a 1996 XR100 with title. I bought the ATC110 for $100. I've had lots more good trades too.

traded my 06 tr300ex that had a butt load of hours on it, a cracked gas tank. and bald front tires plus 200$ for a 05 husqvarna tc250 that still has the lines on the tires. the downside was i had to replace a 5$ part on one of the cams and the clutch fibre decided it want to break apart.it was kinda a win win situation for me neither of us got burned. FAST bike though!
