Ok, so my Honda ATC110 has a major smoking issue. It does come out in rings, meaning that I have issues with my rings. I have Sea Foam in the crankcase and fuel, but it did not seem to make much difference like some people have had sucess with. So, what do I neec to do? Obviously there will be ring work involved, but what else should I do when the top end is off? This will be done with the motor out. I have heard of valve seats being an issue with oil flowing around them. I am assuming I would probably neec to overbore since the cylinder is probably worn. Any advice is appericated. Thank You

How long has the Sea Foam been in there??

well im hoping there is oil in the crankcase with seafoam. you will have to get the cylinder checked. more then likely you will have to bore it to make it quit smoking since the cylinder is going to be wore pretty good if its std. i would replace the valve seals and have the valves and seats cleaned or new valves. check your cam for unusual wear, cam bearing. check to make sure you crank bearing is still good. make sure there are no cracks in the rocker arms and thats about it.

P.S valve seals will make it smoke when its cold, when you let off the throttle and at idle. rings will smoke constant and even more when under load. so if you hammer the gas it will smoke more if your rings are bad.

I had an 84 110 that was a smoker. I gave it a few passes with the dingle-ball hone, new rings on the old piston, lapped the valves/seats with valve compound, and, as I recall, it only has a valve seal on one valve so I replaced that.

For the cost of new rings and a gasket set and a trip to the local shop for the hone and it was running great. We rode the piss out of it for about 6 months and it was still running great when I sold it.

You might need a bore job and a new piston. You might not. I probably did but decided not to because I'm cheap.

The sea foam has been in the crankcase with oil for two days. I knew that it was my rings already, as the smoke comes out in a circle. It looks like I will have to do a rebuild of the cylinder then. Thanks, and don't be expecting any threads on it soon, I'm still gathering other parts. (However, there will be an oil change this weekend)

Say what????

But seriously, start it on the nicotine patch and it should be smoke-free within 6 weeks...:naughty:

But seriously for real this time, all of the above advice should get the job done. It just depends on how long you want it to stay running smoke free. New rings, hone the cylinder and lap the valves in at minimum. Bore over with next overbore size piston, new valves and seals would be a better long term solution..

Oh, and the valve train components that cause oil consumption when worn are generally the valve guides and seals. Not so much the valve seats. The valve seats are what need to seal for proper combustion.

Also, I'm not sure I would be putting Seafoam in the crankcase. Seafoam is a fuel additive that is able to be burned with the fuel and therefore I would infer that it would thin your engine oil significantly. That alone could make it smoke even more.

Don't worry about seafoam in the crankcase, they claim themselves that it is safe to use in your oil. I think I will be doing the job in the next few months, I just
have to wait for the new barn to go up in my yard, and to get a rear fender as I will be doing all of my restoration work as one large job. If I can get the oil
tomorrow, I'll do it then. to ask, what is best to use? Going to an ATV shop is out of the question as the closest one is 30 minutes in the opposite direction of where I go everyday.
