ok i did some searching but still have some ?. I have been looking for a 86 tecate and a buddy called me last night wanting to sell me his 84. the good= red plastic is in good shape, new top end. the bad= rear master cylinder is bad, headlight is wrong, kick start is slipping a bit and right now it will only bump start. wont start by kicking it at all. he is asking 500.00 for it and that dont sound to bad to me. my ? is i really like the looks of the 86s better so will the front end swap? is there any problums that i should be checking on? i havent had a 2stroke in along time so i dont know much about them. thanks for any info.

the problem with swapping the front end would be mounting the radiator

if your wanting an 86 hold out to find one. Dont settle. From what I understand the front end will not swap and the 86 was way better. If your luck is like mine you'll buy his and an 86 will pop up for the same price right after. LOL

I've had both. I prefer the 84-85's. I find the 86-87's to be highly over-rated but to each their own.

agreed on holding out for the 86 if thats what you want. I like both generations: the first generation T3 didnt look bad at all if you add a longer swing arm. Other wise they look a little funky. The 86/87 T3 are SEKSY!!!!!

It's a waste of time and $ to try and make a 1st gen look like a 2nd gen.
There were 2 on here in the CL classifieds links one was for 1000 and it went for 850 in Mi and another one that was in IN went for 150, they were 86's.
They do come up, but you have to be ready to get them as soon as they do or you have to be willing to make a trip to get one.
I'd get the 84 for the time being then sell it if/when you find an 86/7.

watch cl like a hawk and one will pop. i always watch every cl ad up to 3-4 hrs away. every now and then i will see one but when you do find one you gotta jump one it or you will miss it. i know by experience

Well I would have drove to Indian for a $150 one. LOL
I liked my 84. it hauled ass and the big balloon tires were perfect for the winter riding I did.
Anyway...rear master not hard to fix or find another one, kick start could be from coolant/water in oil -usually bad water pump seal or too thick/wrong oil, and carb problems are always fun.

I did find the kickstart assembly inner gears and shaft, that I'd be willing to send to you for the cost of shipping.
After you pick it up please post some pictures.
