Hard to believe and MAY be an urban legend but back in the 70-80's
porche and vw's would come to the dealer smokin' so they mix up some comet cleanser
dump it into the cylinders and spin them with the starter
and then rinse them out somehow.
It would help the rings seat.

The hardcores would just tap comet or bon ami dust into the intakes
as they ran to get the rings to seat.

Sounds like yours is a little more than a glazed cylinder.

Best of luck.
Maybe a simple oil change is a good start?

Maybe gas ran into the crankcase and diluted the oil during your break?

If it was generally healthy before and you happened to break a
ring from sucking a little water, rings, gaskets aand a ball hone should
do wonders for cheap.

Hopefully it was just white steam from a wet exhaust packing.
