Hello all,

Last fall I picked up an 85 ATC250R in decent shape I have had a couple 200X's in the past and a couple 350X's as well as a tecate at one point that I wish i would not have sold! However I always wanted an 85/86 R since i was 15 getting my doors blown off by one while on me 200X. I rode it quite a bit after i got it and was planing on just rebuilding the forks, tidying it up a little and riding it again this year because I still need to finish my FL350R Odyssey project. So... I had a 36mm PWK laying around that I bought for the Oddy and didnt use, so I decided to put it on the trike. Everything went well started and ran well, might have been a little fat on the main so I decided to take it for a ride and clean it out then take a look at the plug. well after running for about 15 minutes I realized that my boot was all oily and there was a shaft or something sticking out of my dang clutch case! Well as you probably guessed... the bolt that holds the primary gear on backed out of the crank and ate a hole in the case. It wasnt until I puled the case off that I understood how badly my little R was suffering from the dreaded previous owner disease! Upon further inspection... I decided to pull the mag side cover off and there I found the rivets that hold the flywheel to the hub are loose?? never saw that one coming. At first I thought it was the big end rod bearing slopping like that but my 14 year old son pointed out to me it was the flywheel moving on the hub...lol. After pulling the flywheel and stator off we found the crank seal blowing 2 stroke oil on the back of the stator and the crank main bearings have about 30 thou. slop in them. So... OFF WITH THE TOP END! I was pleasantly surprised here... Nice fairly new wiseco and a pretty pristine looking un-ported cylinder. I will just hone and re-ring the top. Sorry for writing the book just bringing everyone up to speed. my plans are to clean the ports up some cause I cant seem to leave anything stock. Install a new hot rods crank and bearings, seal, gaskets I am open to tips? Suggestions? maybe a mild port map someone might be sitting on. It has a DG pipe on it and i am going to use a turbine core silencer so its legal for the woods.

Thanks in advance all

I look forward to being a part of the three wheeler world comunity

Welcome to the 3ww family. Good luck in your build. Also it is customary, to post pics of your machine with 7 days of joining or face a ban. (HAHA, Just kidding about the ban)

You'll be amazed at how much better that R is going to run when you done. Be sure and build yourself a leak down tester and make sure you get the bottom end all sealed up. She'll scream when you do!
