Looking into pickuping up an '04 CRF 450R that has no engine. Person is asking 600 bucks with papers. If i can get it for either 4 or 500 is it a good deal, and what's the going rate for just an engine or maybe a wrecked bike with an engine.

I'm doing my own research, but engines aren't jumping out at me in the classifieds or ebay for me to get a real good idea. Thanks in advanced.

The new high perf 4 stroke engines are explosions waiting to happen. I fear that any engine you find will either cost more than a running bike, or will be on its last legs. They are VERY expensive to rebuild properly and if you don't do it right they won’t last. Suggest you look for a complete low hours bike as it will save you $ in the long run.

Or buy the frame and toss in your engine of choice, like an RD 400 engine or something. But I agree, these new engines aren't going to last a long time so it's going to cost you to rebuild.

If the rest of the chassis is really nice, 500 bucks would be a steal. Then, get yourself a CR500 engine and put it into that frame, and you will have yourself a 450 eating machine that is rock solid reliable.

That would be a beast!

Haven't seen roller yet, but the description states that it's "very clean with polished frame and over sized rotors."

The 500 idea would be amazing, but I'm looking to track ride this with my nephew and the track we ride at eventhough big, wouldn't be the best place to ride a monster like that.

I'm more for a 4 stroke mainly b/c I've owned oned in the past and I'd take her trail riding pretty often and the low end torque is friggin great for the steep terrain I rode on, plus to avoid sometimes multiple spark plug changes on the trail during the course of the day is a bonus. Oh yea and there's 1 more thing...they sound bada$$ IMHO!

Hondas little crf 250 is a pretty tough engine.

I rode a '99 yz 400f until a few years ago...reliable as hell, granted i'm no jermey mcgrath, or ricky carmichael, but I had quite a bit of hours on her...to be honest I think i changed the plug once. Of course there are positives and negatives to everything though.

You have obviously never rode a cr500....the low-rpm power is astounding. My bike pulls harder than a 450 everywhere but peak rpm, the 500 is a low-rpm motor.

"Astounding" is often "Terrifying" to some.

Yeah....the 500's arent for the faint of heart.....The power they make is almost evil.
