this winter im going to be splitting the case on my 85 200x to fix the kick start return spring. might as well rebuild the top end and such right? I am getting a new cam from web cams, bumping the comp to 10.25:1 with a weisco, overbore if it needs it or just hone it (well not me... a shop), timing chain, uuum..

i dont want to go crazy. but i do want it to be reliable and have a bit more power. maybe someday ill get some new exhaust for it too. but as for performance all i plan on is a cam, piston, and pipe. it shifts great and the clutch is good. starts like garbage and wont idle (new carb ON the way, the old one was mangled by the previous owners).

all in all im looking for reliability really. what else should i look for while im in there? i want to start knowing what i should buy now or how much i should plan on spending when the time comes. are there ever any problems with lower end bearings? ive read that the cam bearings can be a problem. also my kick start shaft seems to have some side play. is this normal? or am i going to need to get more then just a spring?

any help would be great!

When you go to kick it over dose the kick starter seem to slip at all?

i dont believe it slips. every now and then it will hit the brake pedal tho on its way down. not every time but it does happen.

As long as there is no slipping with the kick starter gears, well thats a good thing, as for the end play, As far as I know thats not normal, I do think your on the right track with it being a spring. Now for the other top end parts I would NOT suggest boring it over any more then you need to about .10 over to clean it up, anymore and they tend to run hot!!! As for the rod bearings check for play in it, and as long as its good and you dont run her out of oil she should never give you an issue. cam bearings, I only had one fail on me because the oil pump went, so went you pull the motor make sure shes got some oil in the head and there is no burning (odd colors on the cam) you should be set !!!

If the kickstarter slips intermittently and it doesn't smoke then leave it alone. Reliability is at its peak with OEM components. Just my opinion.

the kick start doesn't slip, the return spring broke tho so it flops all over and i have to bungee it up.

smoke? no. horrible tick? yes. ive adjusted the valves and it never gets any better or worse. ill try adjusting the cam chain tomorrow. im just worried about the obvious metal shavings in my oil.

If you need the manual here it is. http://www.oscarmayer.net/atc/manuals/ Not saying you do but just putting it out there.

Ahh, yes I forgot. You will need to tear down to replace the spring. I trust you got a new one? I would hone the cylinder, new rings, inspect the cam and get a new cam chain since you will have it apart. You know that the 200x's are noisy in the valvetrain regardless of adjustment, but yes, try to adjust the cam chain and see if that helps. The shavings in the oil can be from a multitude of spots. When you take it apart pay attention to what your bearings and seats look like. A micrometer would be a good investment.
