Ok, I'm down to the last bit of wiring to make this beast street legal, but according to the instructions, the stator wires should be pink and yellow... mine are blue and black/red. I don't wanna fry anything, so what's the deal? Did Honda just change the wire colors after a certain year or what? Has anyone else used a street kit on an XR, or know anything about correct stator wire colors?

black red/ blue are the corect wirte colors for the xr 600's from 84-90 the xl 600 uses a series of wires from the stator of them witch pink and yellow both go to the rectifier / regulator and yellow and white goes to ac regulator, and black and red goes to cdi box. i would assume the light kit has a wirign diagram if its new??

It's an NOS kit Josh, from the mid-90's. The kit instructions said I should find pink, black/red, and yellow. The kit seems to be for any XR, but they have added instructions for an XR250. I called Baja, and the guy said there should be a white/yellow and a green coming out of the stator, and there isn't. He said I should pull the stator cover to see if it's been rewound... the other question is... is there oil in there? Should I lay the bike on it's right side before attempting this?

I agree, he seemed to be more familiar with the newer bikes. I did determine that this kit was from the mid 90's, that's why the wire colors didn't match... pre-1990 wiring colors are different from the newer ones. I think I got the wiring worked out, but nothing works, so I have to get a good battery before I start troubleshooting.

Maybe this will help. Clymer says

Green/White Pulse generator to CDI 4 wire plug
Blue/Yellow Pulse generator to CDI 4 wire plug

Red/Black Alternator to CDI 2 wire plug
Blue Alternator to connector (Tail, Head, Regulator)

Blue Alternator to connector (Tail, Head, Regulator)thanks Rick... the problem is, all I have are the black/red and the blue. This kit is made for 1990+ XR's and shows a 3 wire stator
I need to find a downloadable manual, unfortunately, bikers don't seem to share as good as trikers!

Ok, how about this....

I'm in the same process with my 83 XR500, except I'm going to put an XL rt side cover on it for more amps. Maybe some day it'll look like this

Wow.. love it! I'm not going that "street", but it looks awesome.
As far as looks go, my absolute favorite is the '86 XL, but I could never find a super nice cheap one

i have an 89, thoought about doing this for awhile!! Where the hell you find the super trapp for it!! I looked forever for a good after market muffler, and cobra was like the only one i could find for the 88-91 with the dual headpipe set up! never liked it. going back to stock at some point!! glad you got it all worked out!

Thanks man, these things are beasts! The Supertrapp was on it when I got it, but to be honest, it's kinda loud for my tastes. I may be looking for a stock exhaust eventually as well. Here's what it looks like now...

EDIT: if this is what I'll have to pay, I may stick with the ST!!http://www.ebay.com/itm/HONDA-XR-600-exhaust-silencer-muffler-OEM-XR600R-/200677221494?pt=Motorcycles_Parts_Accessories&hash=item2eb94b6476&vxp=mtr
