My 85 r ,engine will pop ping sounds like metal hitting metal,as you take of fast from3rd gear into 4th real loud will stumble ass it pings . today I said heck with it and just keep on the gas into 6th it stopped would ping every couple seconds if i let up for a sec then hit the gas again pinging loud then would stop.I cant run wot all the time help

a "ping" like an octane knock or a ping like you're about ready to lose a rod? what are the spec's on the engine (stock / not stock)?

Are you trying to start out in third gear.If so they will ping and knock.

like a octane knock, 3rd gear cruzing ,but itll do it in any gear when you start getting on it, the engine is stock bore old paul turner pipe k@n filter boyseen reeds, today after afew knocks and sputers it just died i let the engien bring it to a stop, then gave a litle pray and kicked it over gave some gas working throttle it sputterd back to life

Have you tried cleaning the carb? Or at any point did you have the carb apart? You shouldn't have to spray any starting fluid to get it going. Sounds like there is no gas going to the motor. What octane are you running?

I just put a new air fuelmix screw as the old one fell out ,put a 142 main had a 138 before plus a needle and seet the rubber was shot on old one ,gas would pour out of carb every time you stoped or if putting around ,bike did same thing then jus not as bad,the clip on the needle wasonhe very bottom ,now its second from the top just like the book calls for
