Wow, that sucks. I had that same surprise on my 87 250x. Sucks for sure. I bought a new sprocket shaft but lucky for me the bike was stolen before I installed it. Lol
Your splitting cases bud. Good luck.
That is usually done when the splines on the shaft are wiped out. Most of the time due to worn shift forks or gears letting it jump in and out of gear under load, which in turn strips the shaft. Been there, bought that problem, had to fix it.
Good luck with that lol! That would irritate me

I always like it when idots do that, and weld the shift lever on. It its on splines, it should never be welded, it is intended to be removed! Some people should not have acess to welders.

Some people should just have their naughty bits removed so they cannot contaminate the rest of the world.. That is all.....

See if it's salvageable or right angle grind it with a thin worn out 4" disc; I should have that shaft if you need one.

I found the same thing on my 350x... had to split the cases, but I had the motor freshened up while it was open, so...

Dealing with the same thing. Just finished splitting the cases tonight, less pressing the crank out of one center case.
Well I hate to now admit it, but I kind of see why they welded it. If the sprocket wasn't worn down so badly with broken off teeth I would have just left it. What got to me was that I assumed somebody lost the keeper and/or wanted to run some sprocket they had laying around and just welded it on. The piece of torch cut goodness that is the trailer hitch on it is why I assumed that. :wondering
And yes, I'm in the market for an 86 swingarm in good shape. (No trailer hitches, please!) Not only does that one have the hitch, the aft mount for the skid plate was hung on something and bent badly.
Anyway back to the topic. It wasn't very hard to grind the weld off. The splines that actually carry the sprocket are in pretty good shape, just the outside splines are gone. I really don't want to split it and hunt up a good countershaft. The d@mn thing starts right up and runs good, for a four stroke. LOL! But if that's what it takes, that's what it takes. It would be real hard not to lay a little bead down just to keep it on, but not weld the actual sprocket on like whoever did.
Just a thought, has anyone ever drilled and tapped the center of the counter shaft for a bolt so it's like a 250R? I could use a bolt, a big washer and make a spacer.
Oh well, I knew it was in bad need of TLC when I bought it.

IDK, I bet that shaft is as hard as a rock. You can't even anneal it in the motor as it sits...

My thought exactly...
Yeah I kind of figure it's probably hardened at least to some degree. Probably 50 or 60 Rockwell C! You know, I guess it's not as hard as a sprocket if that's what ripped the outside keeper splines off it. Also thought about grinding a groove in it to fit a heavy duty snap ring, similar to my KXT250 set up. I'd have to do it by hand, and Lord knows that aint precision.
One thing I do know, I can't ruin the shaft no matter what might be done. Then split 'er later on down the road sometime.
