View Full Version : Best bike to start with for 70 suspended conversion?

Okay, I should have never looked at Bruce's Mini Tiger! I've been looking at bikes, trikes, quads, you name it and can't figure out which is going to be the best route for doing a full suspension 70. I like the R55 kit, but $2,000 seems steep for a few parts. I really want a new age look like a crf70 but a trike. Has anyone stumbled onto a different brand atv swingarm that will bolt onto the crf frame? BMS makes a 110cc swingarm in both a inside frame or outside to outside frame mount. Not sure of the distances on either or even how long they are. I've read about 10 different threads and most are fab your own, but still don't have the look I want. I figure I better start building now to have it ready for TF13.

Hondaatc70 was WAY WAY overpriced. 3k and you get less than R55. So far i'm leaning toward a R55 but its really alot of money for what you get. Guess i'll keep researching and possibly order some parts to experiment with.

WOW I didnt realize they charged that much for one. You should get the whole bike for that price.

Yeah that's totally insane! You can buy a new TRX 90 from Honda for that price!

Looks like both hondaatc70 and r55 use that crf70 frame or a pit bike style frame, so I think i'm going to look for a crf70 or pit bike. Pit bike is cheaper, but I kind of like rolling with a true honda theme seems how I don't have my 250r anymore and really like dependability, which honda has. I want the motor to be able to take the abuse of the turbo/efi system. Maybe r55 will sell just the swingarm system if I can't find an atv one that bolts on with minimal mods. I just want a real factory professional look and hopefully stumble onto something that works to help others out. Worse case, I start building bikes on the side again....LOL

i would love to make custom suspension kits. frame and all to use some of the 70 parts

It would be nice even if someone offered a bolt on kit to the factory 70. Doesn't need to be a long travel kit, but something to make the ride quality a little better. If the R55 was about $1000 to $1200, it would already be on the way to my house.

i would not start with anything less than an extended frame.. you can get extended pit bike frames.. and the steering rake on a pitbike needs to be changed also,, trikes and bikes use different rake and it makes a difference,,,

I guess that depends. I want to keep my build (if I do one) the same length and width as stock. The size is 1 of the things that makes an atc 70 a cool bike. I'd rather just have a 200x than an atc 70 the size of a 200x.

a +3 extended frame with 3" bear risers fits a 6 foot rider very nice! and its not even close to a 200x in size,,, besides when you suspend you add weight and height and so width is necessary too,,,

Well you would know better than I, but I'm still going to stick with as close to stock size as possible. I'm 6'2 and I like their stock size.

i planed on buildign one abotu 2 1/2 inches longer then stock for the fact that fit the lifan or aftermarket motrs a littl ebetter and over al ergonomics a lil bit better

Pitbike frame, suspention, and hydrolic disc in my garage. Anyone with a good offer?

Heard the lifan motors don't have have good durability, sounds like the piranha is built better and about the same price. Kasey, have you ever checked to see if the crf gas tank fit yours? That's the tank I really want.

If you were closer I might have been interested, but that's a long drive for me...lol. Already modded frame or stock frame and what suspension is with it?

It's a stripped down Monster Joe that had a Lifan motor in it. You can see one or one close to one on pcc motor site.

In my opinon blue27's mini tiger is the perfect size for an ATC70. I hope he doesn't mind me linking his pic. I think thats about as close to stock size as you can get.

Size is not bad, but it is a little longer then a stock frame 70. If I do another one it will be 2" longer then stock. Here is a pic taken by Ditchmud (thanks) at Trikefest with a Tiger front fender and A+ rear fender.

The mini Tiger is what put me over the edge on deciding to build one...lol. I'd love to just find a pk or a+, but the odds of that is probably about zero now days.

With just 2 brackets welded onto the top of the frame(and the stock front tank mounts ground off), a CRF style tank bolts right on... I'm no welder, and I did it in 20 minutes.

Xtreme Typhoon ATV parts bolt directly onto a CRF50 style frame. My sons has an Xtreme Typoon 125 and it is a pitbike frame with a front add on section and a swing arm for an ATV axle. Or you could just find a used Typhoon, pull the front atv frame off and bolt in whatever forks you want.
The only bad part is the rear axle bearings are a little weak because they are very thin, but the carrier can be machined out for a larger bearing. I bought my son's atv for $300 and put about $45 into new bearings.

Is the frame extended enough when you remove the quad clip or does the frame still need to be lengthened?
Extreme sold a 3 wheeler a few years ago.. you could buy a fat tired bike and the quad swinger, subframe, axle and fenders. Was pretty nice but it was pricey! Do a search on it and it will come up. I think it was undr new production 3wheelers

I have my son's Typhoon if anyone needs any pics.
If you start a Typhoon there's not a ton of work to switch it out over forks on the front end.
The ATV doesn't use bearing in the steering stem just rubber bushings. Pit bike bearing and races will install right into the frame. All you would need is figure out the front end.
The swing arm does need some strengthening where the rear shocks bolts on to, but its very easy to do.

151678151682151679151680151681151683It's really hard to beat the originals. But, there may be a way.... But the recipe calls for chromoly and 200+CC's! By the way, the first red tank and fender trike is how the mini Tiger started out.

ok now i'm curious, has anyone tried a mini quad conversion like bigger 450R conversions and such? doesn't seem like it would be that much harder, just downsize the conversion kit maybe?

There were mini quad conversions, let alone the trx70 or the 4zinger or quadzinger which were factory mini quads.
