I got a 330 BB in a 86 ATC 250R I cant run a lid because it dont flow enough air at 3/4 up throttle. I trail ride sometimes in rain by chance, dust so thick you can only see 20 feet. So I cant run a open filter. I normally service my filter every 2 tanks of gas (100 miles which is a days ride) So can I or should I use
uni filter only with no lid
k and N with outer wears which I could take a spare cover along to change out on a 200 miler day
or a k and n or uni with a stock lid all chopped out except the perimeter to secure a mabey 12"x12" outerwears sheet over the entire top. If I can buy it that way.

This will get as opinionated as an oil thread. Take this as my experience only.
I have been running a K&N without an outer ware for 5 years with a drilled lid and every time I clean it I wipe the intake tube with a white cloth and had zero dirt show up. I also think either filter will do it's job if they are properlyprepared. I have seen way to many foam filters that do not have enough oil in them to catch the dirt.

I saw this the other day, it's a kit for your airbox lid to convert it to a outer ware type lid

I went riding this past weekend on my R in some of the most dusty conditions I have ever rode in. I have the air box to frame snorkel removed and the opening covered with a piece of stainless window screen. I have the airbox lid on with no holes in it. K&N filter properly oiled with no outer wear. Twice during the day I removed the filter and the airtube to the carb was absolutely dust free. Inside of the airbox was quite dusty. I was amazed. I've been procrastinating on replacing the K&N with an Uni. Now I'm not so sure I need to replace the K&N. For oiling the filter I'm using PJ1 air filter oil in an arisol can. Amazing stuff.
