anyone know if these motors are similar? got an idea kicking around in my head... and was the 350 shaft drive the same motor as a 350 chain drive, just with a different output? and lets see if anyone can guess where this project idea is going....

I know the 200/225/250 yamaha shaft motor was almost interchangeable for about 15 years..

My 225DR that I owned had the same exact design as the motor in my brothers 2000 Bear Tracker 250..in fact some have told me that the 225DR motor would drop into his quad in a pinch.

But the 350 might be a stretch..I know they are similar but have never gotten close enough to say if they are swapable to do the crazy thing that is clunking around in your head!!

Though a 350cc Yamaha trike would be a cool experiment..

i think so, I have often wondered why yamaha never made a big 4 stroke trike. and in many ways it could be better than a 350x electric start, no maintence shaft drive... and with the 350 motor how its leaned forward a bit would make it less wheelie happy.. which could be a good thing too...

The 350 motor is huge compared to the 225. alot of frame mods the fit it in there.

I've got a running 1993 YFM350 Moto-4 with a torn up ring and pinion. Too bad I don't have my 225DXs anymore! I'd much rather have chain drive on anything though. It seems like a shaft drive set up only lasts twice as long as a chain and sprockets but then when you have a problem you might as well just scrap the bike.

Well, the Warrior 350, which came out not long after the ban, was a complete and utter pig compared to the 350X. I could see Yamaha having planned on using that engine in a trike, but I doubt it would have been as sports biased as the X. Probably a mix like the 225.

Shaft driven sport trike would be terrible. I also find it funny how people say shaft drive is maintenance free. Drive through some mud holes and see what happens :)

well weather or not a 350 in a 225 is a good idea or not.. i think i wanna build it.. would be a fun winter project.. im guessing the 400 found in kodiak's would probobally work too, just have to find a way to eliminate the middle drive gear. and interesting note.. i wonder if the BW350 was intended to be a 3 wheeler? and they didn't have it done in time. so it became the bw350? i wonder i wonder...

i know there was a similar build in the works on the site within the past year. I don't know whatever became of it though. I searched for the thread and couldn't find it
