151054 Here is the picture for the ad I had posted for craigslist for my 1985 Honda ATC 250R 3 years ago.
Long story short sold it to a kid and we agreed if he was to sell it I would have first dibs to buy it back if he ever sold it. Gave him all my personal info just in case he was to get rid of it. One year later I saw my precious and complete 250R was being parted out on ebay here by our local ATC & TRX cannibalizer.
Boy I was pissed and to be honest I did look for the kid to ask about our agreement and I did find out kid needed the money and he sold it for $800 what a DICK.
Lesson learned not to sell any of my bikes to anyone who isn't passionate about Honda ATC or TRX 250R's.

Now,,this was a DEF Rider! 85 complete rear, leaky fork seals,,Maier plastic,,but I went through it and it was a Runner!! Well,,It's for sale on CL for $2000,he won't get it,,{ I don't think} But A call would have been nice.

Got a similar story....
First R rebuild for me was an 82 fooler. Spent a year and about 2500-3000 on bringing the little beasty back from the dead. Bored, decked, bigger carb. It was seriously sick. Sold it to a guy in Kansas and told him I had a box of parts and would give them to him later. Met up with him 3 weeks later and he said "well I really don't need the parts now". I said why and he proceeded to tell me that I didn't tell him how powerful the bike was and he launched it off a levee into a tree. Said he completely ripped the front forks off and the steering stem and downtube was bent into the motor. I thought I was gonna puke. Lesson I learned....when I build "my bike", I don't sell it ;)

Oh man the sux. I have been through the same thing. I sold the 350X in my avatar to a kid who then traded it for a rusted out 83 camaro worth about 300 dollars. My 350X was very very nice. complete with nothing missing or messed with. It was then stolen from the camaro dude and another guy parted it. I know where the frame is at and it was painted blue. What a complete waste. I learned my lesson too.

I agree that if someone told you they would give you first dibs then they should have at least done that. But if they met your asking price and didn't get a "special" deal, then they shouldn't make those promises. Now if they want more than what they paid that is their right. Ifyou can't meet the price, then that is your problem. Not saying that is the case on here, it's just my opinion. I personally don't make promises like that though. If I buy something it is mine. If I want to part it out, run it off a cliff, or anything else I can think of then I will doit and make no apologies to anyone. They shouldn't have sold it in the first place. If money was tight at the time, oh well. Life's a trailprotrailprotrailprotrailprotrailpro. This is coming from a dude that's been poor all his life. I hate to see running bikes get parted out, but some have to be sacrificed to keep ours going. What would you rather buy a part off of- a run down piece of crap or a nice clean running trike? I would go with the latter. JMO.

I've learned that...if it isn't sold to a close friend or relative that I'm in constant communication with....once it leaves my hands...it's gone for good.

Sickening. When I was a teenager I built an 86 Mustang, there wasn't one thing on that car that wasn't touched by me. A little later I bought a 92 Mustang to build. A friend of mine was hounding me for that 86. I finally gave in and sold it. He completely trashed the car. He hit the ditch a few times, it never got severly wrecked or anything like that. But it eventially got parted out and its probably already returned from China as who knows what.

I think if your selling something once it is bought if they trash it,part it out, or don't take care it is their business because you do not own it anymore. I don't get it if you tell the buyer " I got dibs on it if you decide to sell" If you love the ride why sell it? Why should the kid be obligated to you once he owns it? If you love the 250r you should have kept it and not posted what a tool the guy is on a public forum. If this was about a dog you had to sell because you have to move or something that would be understandable wanting a good home for it but that is my take on the deal.

I see where you're coming from.. And in essence you are right. It's a matter of word. If he gives the PO 1st shot at it,and he says no. part it,sell it whatever! Just give them the oppurtunity you promised.
If I have an emotional attachment to something it doesn't get sold. If I do sell something, you can use it for a battering ram for all I care. If it comes down to providing for my family everything is fair game.
I have learned that material things are just that, material.
It does suck seeing perfect bikes being parted out but I have also bought some very nice parts for my rebuild because of those bikes, so its a double edged sword as far as I'm concerned.

I agree with you it's his to trash if he feels he has to he paid me $1400 for it.
But I wasn't going to sell it to him but thinking about that it just sits in garage it's never used and most important part was my nieces and nephews wanted to ride it and the 2 times they did all I kept thinking was someone is going to get hurt, thank god no one got hurt but the rear fender got a small crack and that would have to be replaced and other parts were hard to come if they broke.
But again the thing that bugs me the kid begged me his dad spoke to me about how he wanted it and he was going to buy one so they can go do the son and dad thing. And thats when I asked if anything happens I want it back and both agreed " that should be no prob".

Maybe I was a little harsh on my take on the deal. Think positive it looked like a nice ride and someone is probably happy with the parts they scored and your old 250 kept another one alive. It's better to see one parted out than left in a barn to rot and when someone tries to buy the hoarder won't sell even though they will never fix the thing anyway.

Yes I agree with you and I'm now on the hunt for another one but it will be hard to find a 1985 Honda ATC 250R with the Hondaline accessories on it from factory. But i'm keeping my hopes up and thanks for responses everyone.

Thanks jb104 but i'm looking for something that is original and mostly intact and I see you don't have the original and expensive OEM seat, OEM handlebars, rear rims and tires, and most important looks like I would have to replace that rear fender that project would be too expensive for my budget. But I really do appreciate the offer and she looks to be nice but i'm looking for something mostly OEM.
