i recently inherited this head as part of a sale/trade. it was in rough shape, but luckily, and very thankfully, i have access to very, very skilled tradesmen whom are gracious enough to donate their time on this piece.

heres the pictures i was sent from the PO

many, many thanks to Don AKA "Rough Rider" for his help in repairing the cut (not broken) fins. there were clear hacksaw marks in the fin where someone had cut the fin down for some reason. best i could figure it may have had some desert tank with a low hanging petcock :hide and the fin had to be cut for clearence. maybe a boost bottle could have been shoved up in there??

hit it with a light dose of air grinder to knock down the big stuff and flatten out the fins. it will need more shaping and sculpting, but its coming together nicely.

the original profile of the repaired fins was a squared edge, rather than a tapered edge, i decided to stick with the tapered edge cuz its a little different.

began stripping the blue off... to find red underneath

the dome will be addressed after the stripping is done and the fins are smoothed out

What are you using to clean out the old paint in between the fins once the stripper does it's work?

Looks good, I put some stripper on my head last night and it didn't touch the black paint on it.

I'm using the same brand as you, but in an aerosol can.

Thanks guys. I've been very fortunate to have such a skilled welder to help with this.

Got a lil more paint stripped. This thing started gold, was sand blasted and painted black, that was poorly taken off and it was then painted red. After the thick coat of red, it got a really thick coat of blue. Its almost naked now!

I just let the stripper do most of the work. You'll need a long, stiff bristled brush to get down between the fins, but if you put the head in a bag n coat it in the stripper. Leave it over night. Dip it in 6-8 inches of water n let it dry. Hit it again with the stripper n repeat

Ya the dome is going to need a real working over. I'm looking forward to watching the artwork being performed on the dome when the time comes. Next week. Can't wait

Are you going to be utilizing this piece or are you just restoring and selling?

It's got it's place reserved atop my 84R's motor, once I get that damned bottom end worked out
