Sending Paypal as a Gift

I assume most of ya'll know this, but I ran into a buyer the other day that didn't, so I thought I would mention it here. If you send Paypal as a gift it does not charge any fees to the seller. But, to my understanding it will not cover you if somebody rips you off. On this forum, anytime I buy something I usually send it as a gift as long as the member has been here for a while and has really good feedback. If not, I start doing it after a few positive transactions with the person. Now, if we are talking more than a couple hundred bucks it's a little different, but in those situations I have done it both ways. I just know it sucks to sell something with shipping included and then on top of that have a few more dollars taken out by Paypal.

With that said, I have only been ripped off one time while using Paypal. I had not sent it as a gift though. I won a swingarm on Ebay for 99 cents+$15 shipping. I paid immediately and never heard anything (I never pay as a gift on Ebay thoug). The seller wouldn't answer any email. After about a week or so I filed a complaint and Paypal got my money back within just a few more days.

I too send Paypal as a gift as long as the member has been here a while. I haven't been burned sending Paypal as a gift so.. knock on wood..

If I am selling something I really don't care if the buyer sends it as a payment or a gift. Just let me know beforehand, as the price of the item may change depending on the amount of the item.

when Paypaling as a gift, sender absorbs the paypal fees, a nice gesture but definitely not a "must do"

I have never absorbed any fees. Maybe I don't know exactly what you mean by that. Doesn't come out of my account though if I send something as a gift.

sure, its added to your buying total before sending money to the seller.

Also, when sending funds as a gift (or the other numerious ways paypal offers) your mailing info will NOT show up in paypal payment information.
So, be sure to e-mail or pm your mailing info (complete with full name) to the person you are buying from.
I too don't think there are any fee's for seller or buyer when sending as "gift"

I sent a payment as a gift the other day and the fees were paid by me - not sure how to do it so no one has to pay the fee.

I don't know. On more than one occasion I have sent my total balance to my wife's account and she received exactly what I sent. Say I got $100 in there and I send her $100- she gets $100. A day or so ago I had $95 in there and gifted a member on here $42 and wound up with $53 left. Maybe I am missing something though. But I'm sure this thread ain't helping matters none lol.

@shortline- I think it's because they were putting their mailing address in there. I always send mine through PM or email instead of with the paypal payment.

PayPal changed it... Gift payments are no longer free, the sender gets charged the transfer fee, it was in their policy changes email back in the end of June i think it was. Also as others mentioned it doesnt give the recipient any personal info such as your address and its also not covered in case of problems.

Your better off paying as a purchase and then sending extra to cover the fees if your seller insists on the full amount minus fees, that way your purchase is protected in case they walk and your still paying the same amount if you elect to cover the fees!

I just logged in and checked thoroughly...

If you send a gift payment from your bank account or PayPal balance, there will be no fee. However, if you send it from a card the normal 3.4% + 0.20p will apply.

Also note that gift payments have no buyer or seller protection as there is no item involved.

paypal didnt change anything. If you send it as a gift and your payment is backed by a credit card there is a fee. if the payment is linked to a confirmed bank account there is no fee.The only thing paypal changed is the steps to make a payment. I am paraphrasing here so if I don't get the wording 100% forgive me. it used to say I am sending a gift, or paying for goods. now it says I am sending money to friends or family, or paying for goods. as far as I am concerned we are all friends and all part of the same family.

x2 with Just Ben, thats how it goes. If you do it with a credit card it charges you but not with a bank account. I didnt hear about any changes. but I have seen people on different boards im on where they have been caught onto by paypal because of the material in their subject lines or message bodies that state anything about items etc being exchanged between either party.

I usually gift everything except for ebay. Screw ebay and screw paypal, they are making a mint off of a service that has almost no overhead. Im just jealous because I didnt come up with the idea :D seriously though they make so much money of just a few percentages of everyone's total.

Yes they did change some things... Its important you read through the account changes emails as they come out, the policy changes can really get you as they are sneaky as hell if you don't keep an eye on them.

There's no pay pal protection for anything bought off this site weather it sent as a gift or not. FACT! Only ebay auctions are covered by pay pal protection.

I can put a link up to a 3ww deal that the buyer was refunded by paypal and all he had to do was open a claim and prove his case.

It depends on your account and how you fund it. If you have a PayPal Buyer Credit account, basically the PayPal credit card, and you use that to fund a purchase and select goods as your purchase type and the seller is a verified member, which is a stupid requirement because for the last two years now you have to be verified to receive payments, and you file a claim it will go through the dispute process. If you file a claim on a payment funded by balance or bank account they are not as forgiving if its other than eBay. Basically if you use their credit card then you get all the protection, they kiss your butt, otherwise your on your own unless your also using ebay.
