Im mocking up a cardboard airbox toaday that im going to make out of aluminum. My question is should i keep the stock intake setup or fab one? I know getting that flat shape is going to be hard but i can use some oval aluminum tubing to mimick that and tig some round tubing to the carb end or both ends. If i use the stock setup that limits me to one type of filter. If i make a round hole on the box i will get more airflow and be able to use different filters.

That's the best thing about making custom parts, you can do whatever you want!
I decided this time around to make my air box and air tube and filter mount all one unit.

I really love this setup for being quick and easy to remove several parts in one hunk.

Really like that setup. I really wasn't going down the one piece path myself. I want everything to go together nicely but be able to take things apart if something messes up
The nice thing about the stock Z air filter location is that it is up very High to avoid water and mud. The bad thing is, I do believe it is not set-up for max efficiency of what they can really have.
Personally, they use to make a kit that went where the coolant bottle was so you had a small rear airbox in the posistion it should be. Maybe look into that. That factory system takes up alot of space and weight IMO..If you are going through the work to re engineer something, you might as well change it. I have a feeling if you did make under seat boxes, you could probably sell quite a few of them.

Well after doing some calculations today i went into my office and scrapped the box i had mocked up. The box was of good design but the intake would prove to be a challenge. I changed directions and am now building a box based on the old school plastic werks under seat box. Mosh thank you and when i get one finished i'll donate it to the fallen member z! If anyone has one of these old air boxes could you send me the dimensions?
