This recoil I am working on is not like the Yamahas I have done in the past. I need some direction here. I remember a thread a long while back that laid out a step by step process on putting one of these back together. I cannot fond it now; I guess it is too old. Can some one please walk me through how to get this thing functional again?

I get the whole thing put together, but it does not work. Am I suppose to keep tension on it? I tried but it do not stay sprung.

Are you sure the ends of the main spring caught the tabs ( 1 on the case and 1 on the pulley )? There should be tension on the rope at all times so that the rope will pull in and hold the handle in position when not in use. if the spring ends are catching the rope will pull out and not go back in all the way or not go in at all.

I thought so. The spring ends are catching like they should. EVen though I kept tension on it as I assembled it, when i did a test pull the rope did nothing. I ulled itoutbut it didnot recoil.

Once the tabs on the spring catch you need to preload the spring by 3 or 4 turns on the pulley (IIRC). It's been awhile since I rewound one. You can always put a couple of winds on the spring run the rope thru the housing and give it a couple of test pulls to see if it retracts properly.

I have not even installed it yet. I am trying to get it to recoil off the trike.

Pull the c-clip off the top and see if the pull starter retracts. If it don't then either the spring isn't catching or you need to add more rounds to gain more power. The pulley has a small knotch in it that will allow you to wind the pulley with the rope installed. Just pull a loop in the rope between the case and pulley and wind it up. If the spring isn't catching you should hear it slip as you wind the rope / pulley.

Your doing this part 100% correct!!!
Alway, Always, Always test the pull starter BEFORE installing it.

I figured it should work off the engine before it would work on it.

If you had the main spring out it is possible that you put it in backwards. Seen that a few times.

I left that thing right in place. I took everything else out though.

You preload the spring before youthread the rope thru the housing and put the pull handle on the rope.

Here, try these 2 vids. I didn't have time to watch them all the way thru, but IIRC he does a decent job. :

Part 2 may be all you need since you have it apart already ;):

Howdy, what about a pinned post (can't think of the proper term :P) with one or all of these vids?

Thats one way of doing it in the video but IMO thats the harder way LOL . Install the rope on the pully and give it 3 complete turns with tension and slip the rope threw the hole !! I think I could have done 3 recoils in the 15 min it took that guy to do the rebuild , also melt the ends of the rope with a lighter so they dont fray .
