Need some advice guys. I picked up a 200x a while back and it was idleing kind of rough. It would run fine but when you would Rev it and let it slow back down the rpms would drop.way to low almost dieing. I bought a rebuild kit and now it seems even worse. Sometimes it will idle but.when you go to Rev it it will choke out . Sometimes you can get it to Rev and hold it there but it will backfire some. The idle screw doesn't seem to effect it either way. Also is the pilot screw suppose to be wobbly when its at two turns out? Seems like air could go right around it. It has stock jetting in it and adjusting the metering rod doesn't seem to help either. Think it could also be the valves or timing? Any help would be great...

Have you removed the petcock and cleaned it out?

Clean everything related to fuel. From the tank filer (I remove them and run inline)
Remove all jets, squirt carb cleaner and high pressure air in them.
When it dies, shut off the fuel. Then open the carb bowl drain screw and see what you have.
Other than that, get a professional...

If I were you I would go to you're local Advance and pick up one of those paint bucket sized cans for carb cleaning. Take everything rubber out of you're carb and take all the pieces and parts of the carb apart. Then, inside the carb cleaner is a basket so you can place everything inside the basket and soak it for about 20 min or so. I just did the same thing because my 86 didn't ave the pick up it used to.
What filter are you using?
Also you can look at you're service manual and time the valves correctly. I haven't done it yet but it looks easy. I need a top end rebuild then I'll have a wing at it.
If that doesn't fix it
...get a professional...

I'll try that and see what happens. I'm thinking of doing a valve job on it as well. I ordered a Moose rebuild kit for the carb and I went to put the new pilot screw in it today and it was a different thread!!! Talk about pissed.

It seems something is up with your pilot screw. It should not be really loose like you are describing. Are you sure someont didnt cram the wrong screw in there? I would think the moose kit should have the correct screw. Does the needle look a lot different than the moose one? Like longer, shorter, different shape? Make sure the threads in the carb are not cross threaded, which would tell you someone forced that screw in there. If it is the wrong pilot screw, it will not run correctly, and would be especially noticable at idle and low rpms. The pilot screw is either an air screw or a fuel screw. Airbox side of carb = air screw, and engine side of carb = fuel screw. Try adjusting the screw either in or out while its running to see if you can get it to run a little better. Also check the slide, right where the idle screw would touch. See if there is a burr there, and if so use a file to smoothe it out a little and remove the bur. This is a very common problem with older bikes, as the slide has come into contact with that screw thousands of times over the years. Hope this helps. ------ Jon

The moose kit I bought for my 86 200X had the wrong pitch on the air screw thread.
The order should go - screw, spring, metal washer, rubber o-ring. It MUST be in that order.
The valves on that motor take about 2 minutes to set. Tank stays on etc. Follow the manual, the idea was genius.......
