Ok, I understand he is only asking $600 for an '86, so you have to assume it needs some work. So I called him and asked what's not working on it, tell me now before I drive 2-1/2 hours to come see it. He said the front brake cable is missing and it needs a battery. I can see broken plastics in the pics, but that too is to be expected at the price point, so I went for it.

When we got there, the pictured ITP Mudlites were mysteriously absent, replaced by old rims with worn out tires.
The entire motor was covered in oil, leaking from the head area.
It was also covered in metal shavings. He said, "Oh, yeah, I had to replace a bolt on top of the head with a self tapping bolt". Huh?
Front fender was worthless, stitched together.
Front brake cable is mssing, and Rear foot brake does not work. I drove it into a fence before he told me this.
The driveshaft boot is made of electrical tape.
Some wiring disconnected from the engine.
Kick starter is rigged on somehow, looks like it might not be original.

All in all, this thing is a POS that has been rode to death. It DID run ok, starting on the 5th or 6th kick. I offered him $450, which in retrospect was way more than it's worth. He just said "It's rare" and said $500 was as low as he would go.
I don't think he expected me to walk, but I did. If he called me back today I'd offer him $300.

What did he say about the tires being swapped?

Sounds like your typical bait and switch scammer!!

We weren't able to get there until after dark, which I am sure he thought was to his advantage. I was so disgusted about the motor being covered in oil and metal shavings that I actually didn't think about the tires until we were out of there, and suddenly the light bulb went on. I pulled up the ad on my phone and showed it to my buddy and said "Did those look like Mudlites to you?". No, they looked like worn out Duro mud and sand tires. I wish I had mentioned it to his face and seen his reaction.

I also neglected to mention that I drove it into a fence. He mentioned that it had no front brake, so when I started it and took off into the yard, I discovered it had no rear brakes either. After I picked myself up and hollered "No f'ing brakes!" he said, "The hand brake works." Well, nice of you to let me know, dude.

wow it looks way better in the pics lol but he doesn't have any close up pics of the engine either conveniently.

Yeah, he avoided the engine in the pics, because close-up you can see a bunch of RTV or something squeezed out of the head gasket area. Cuz everyone knows that's how you fix a head gasket leak!
