Well this isnt a trike but I like this site and trust the info given on here. I just got a 1996 KX500 a week ago, its a messy bike but it runs! cost me $600. The oil drain has a this rubber wing nut deal, the dude said he stripped the threads. Its not leaking but.. Idk it just doesnt look right. I would like to retap it, is there any good videos on retaping or instructions any one knows about. Or could any one explain the process from experience? Things im confused about: 1) Stock drain bolt size is M10 1.5, so I need a M12 1.5 bolt, right? 2) Metal shavings? How do I keep them out of the motor? 3) Will a magnetic bolt attract any shavings if they do get into the motor? 4) Things Ill need?

This would go down at the bottom of this page,Bikersville. They will move it for you. Slight, and I mean very slight! Chance you will be able to simply clean up the threads, m10,1.5. More than likely you will go a size bigger. AE or Metric. Simply put a lot of grease on the tap,and take your time, wala, fresh new threads, new bolt ,and you're good for another 20 years. The shavings will stick in the grease, works like a champ,,same for plug holes. Done it a 100 times.

Find a Heli-coil and fix it right, and still use your original drain bolt.

Here is some reference reading for your repairs.

Personally I would stay away from larger self tapping chincy repair bolts. They tend to stress the aluminum and cause the cases to crack as they dig into the support boss for the original thread support.

I dont post often on here but visit quite often. I would stay away from Heli- coil as the proper fix. Time certs work 10 x better and are much more reliable. Just a thought if you decide to repair it. Heli - coils, in my opinion, are for a one time use, time certs however will allow you to remove the drain plug numerous times.

but i have taped out drain bolts (including my 94 kx500) and used the drainbolt from a suzuki 250 or 500 quadracer, i belive its 12mm thread diamiter and a 1.50 thread pitch, use a good cuttign fluid made for aluminum, for clean threads, start gently and 1/2turn forward 1/4 turn back and keep thins slow and use your feel, and the grease on the tap does help trap shaviongs and sodoes compressed air int he oil fill hole.

I am not here to berate you or argue the merits of which is better, time sert or Heli-coil, cause they both have advantages over the other..

But what you are saying about heli-coils being one time use, is totally false.
I have been using one in a 250R engine since 2008 for a drain plug repair, and done at least 20 oil changes on that machine and the helicoil is still fine.

Well.....................I Guess what I stated was a personal preference thing. I have had good luck with Time-Cert and "not so" good luck with Heli-Coils. If you have had a trouble free repair using a Heli-Coil I would have to chaulk up my experience with user error. Thanks for the input Mosh! and no, I dont feel berated or assailed one bit. I have big shoulders and thick skin
