I am putting my 125m motor back together after having to split the case to fix a transmission problem. I have a new gasket set and am wondering if a gasket sealant is necessary? If so what is best to use?

I do not believe it is necessary. Most of my manuals don't even mention or suggest it.

Not if you use good gaskets, unless it's a cover you might want to remove again like the clutch or CDI
cover. For this application I like a thin layer of grease to keep the gasket from sticking.
There are occasions I like to get gasket adhesive..spray it on the gasket and cover to stick the gasket so it doesn't slip out of position during assembly.

Gasket sealant is necessary where your manual tells you to use it. I recommend Hondabond HT.

or in areas where any pitting or galling it present ( somone prying cases apart with flat heads etc.)
Give it a little flat file and maybe a dab of sealant if you still feel a nic.
