I met a local excavator/farmer while he was doing a job at my sister's house. A few of us went over to tear it up on the "mx track" he made while working :naughty:
When he saw we had a 3 wheeler with us, he asked me if I'd be interested in buying a 250sx he has in his barn. I went to look at it today...
Starts and runs great, no head noise, no leaks or smoke. It has old Maier plastics, home made mud flaps, bent handlebars, needs a battery, needs a seat cover(and foam), and a it has an '86/'87 headlight shell painted red to match the trike. Also has a weird crack where the tank is bolted on, going from the mount bolt up both sides toward the actual fuel tank area... future problem, I'd imagine. Anyway, what would you pay for this? I think he's way high, but my brother says no, so I'll tell you how much he wants later.

I'd offer maybe $500 or $600 but not too much more than that...

I can't see paying over $500 and personally I would not even pay that.

Looking at your list of toys, you can afford to be selective!

Prices have gone downright wacky lately.
A year ago, 3-400 for that one.
Now? 6-800.
Keys and title often mean something too.
I'm kinda hooked on racks and trailer hitches these days.
Sx racks seem to be hard to find.

Problem is, he's a guy who doesn't "need" to sell anything, and he says he's got $800 tied up in it... we'll see. It's not advertised, he said he'd push it back in the barn til I'm ready for it.

ya I wouldnt go over 3 or 400 for that one. The petcock even looks spray painted in the pictures, not a good sign if things are just sprayed randomly that shouldnt be covered in spray paint. I like the sport grips on it :D

The deal is with all these "what its worth" threads is it all boils down to how long do you plan on owning this machine. If its just something your buying to ride for a season then sell I wouldn't spend more then what you could sell it for. That machine as your describe it I feel I could sell for $650 comfortably with the current market in my area. If its something you love to own and have no intentions of selling anytime in the near future then by all means spend the extra coin and find a nice one. Something you can afford and enjoy.
What confuses alot of people with value is the cost to buy in at and the cost to repair. So lets use the SX as a example. Lets say you find one for $250 that needs tires plastic is not the greatest and needs bearing, breaks and suspension work to be functioning correctly. Add that all up. Now the price of a nice $700 ready to ride machine dosent sound to bad.
I had to learn this the hard way. The cheap machines sometimes don't turn out to be so cheap when it's all said and done. It's cheaper in the long run to find a ready to run machine then to build. Although I do enjoy bringing a machine back from the dead. :)
