-------------------------------------------------------------------
Well I decided that today is the day that my Tecate will die.

Rolled her into the driveway for the last time in one piece. Kind of hurt taking it apart, I've had a lot of fun memories on this bike in the past 2 years that I've owned it. An hour later and she was no longer able to roll on her own 3 wheels anymore:
http://imageshack.us/a/img11/8862/24141248244146951815031.jpg
Still have about another hour or two of work to go before parts will be ready to be cleaned up and sent off to powder coating. This is going to be a slow rebuild, my goal is to at least have it back together and in good riding shape by the time Imperial Invasion rolls around. Here is the plans:
-BACK TO GREEN!!! None of this red crap. It's a Kawi, not a slow Honda!!
-New front tire (already have sand paddles mounded on aluminum wheels)
-Powder coat frame Kawasaki Green
-Powder coat handlebars and swingarm a primer gray
-10" Rigid Industries E-Series LED light bar
-LED tail light
-DG Pipe/Silencer
-Maier Green plastics
-DC Plastics Number Plate
-New seat cover (this one really grabs your ass, hard to slip off the side for sweet sideways shenanigans)
My budget allows for about $1500 in parts, hopefully I can squeeze it all in there. I'm not looking for show quality, just something a lot fresher than the condition it's in currently.
I think I can manage another season out of the engine before it's going to need to be tore down and rebuilt, so I'm going to clean it up and leave it alone for the most part. It ran really strong the last time I rode it (maybe a week ago). If anyone has any of the above parts they want to let go inexpensively to help out a fellow triker then by all means let me know. I'll be more than happy to buy it off of your hands, and clean out your garage space :Bounce:D

Bump, got everything down to just the frame and the engine today:

Looking like I'll also have to add a full bearing replacement too, swinger bearings are toast, might as well do the bearing carrier and steering stem...

Wow no replies? Humm...
Got my first couple of parts in today. Front tire and a kill switch. Still waiting for my seat cover, which will be here next week sometime.

And I'm still looking for a green rear fender... If you've got one hit me up!!!!

Awesome man, I like that front tire. I always contemplate disassembling my R and doing a full build... I think it is about time, for either the x or the R.
Looking good.

Sucks seeing them all in pieces like that doesn't it? Keep chuggin along there Xpress, it is a labor of love and what you have planned sounds pretty sweet.
I have some money coming in this winter and I will be getting going on my other '85 R ("slow Honda" as you put it ;)). And I can't wait to get started! Driving me nuts waiting for that $$$ to come in so I can start buying parts!

I am sure you will be able to sell those Honda red plastics with no problem. have fun with it. I know for me, one of the main reasons I like to wrench on trikes is because it is my stress reliever. Its not work and it gets me out of the house.

Thanks gents!!!
Yeah, I stay away from those SLOW HONDAS!!!:Bounce:lol:
It's definitely a labor of love. There's nothing I like more than tinkering with something, just to make it better. This will be the first time I've actually rebuilt something though.
I'll definitely try to sell the red plastics.

what? sir how could you??!!!!!
(wrinkles in the cover already) :p
actually if the seat pan is plastic, (think it is) take a propane touch heat the bottom up near the curve where ti bends up jsut enought o get it to move and oush it more straight. this will make sure that old curving up issue is foen when you put it back o the bike as well as take that wrinkle out. ;)

Wrinkles?? There's 3 ribs in the front of the foam, that's what those 3 bumps are. I don't think it's half bad for my first ever attempt.
If anyone is curious as to where I got the cover from, HC Camo seats on eBay:
http://www.ebay.com/sch/hc-camo-seating/m.html?_nkw=&_armrs=1&_from=&_ipg=&_trksid=p3686
Each is handmade, so it takes about a week or so after you buy it to get the seat, but they're EXCELLENT and high quality for so little coin. Going to be buying more from these guys.
Also, got my front tire mounted up. Eventually gave in and asked a buddy if he could help out. He had a buddy at a tire shop that popped the bead in place real quick, no charge..

Hoping it'll fit just right with the bike.. wonder how it's gunna do in sand...

Hi,
This has been a long time coming.... Life decided that I wasn't going fast enough and sped things up to wide open throttle, means I haven't had time to work on the bikes much! But now that's changing. To give a fresh assessment of what's going on:
-All Balls steering neck bearings purchased
-DG Silencer bought
-Aftermarket kill switch bought
-Front tire bought
-Rear Maier fender bought
All of this occurred over the last 5 years :lol:
Still on the list, in no particular order:
-Front wheel bearings
-Rear carrier bearings
-Swingarm bearings
-All bearings for rear suspension linkages
-Powdercoat frame
-Rebuild front forks
-Find a different rear shock (I hear 300EX rear shock is popular?)
-Fix crack in rear swinger/find a different swinger
-Powdercoat rear bearing carrier
-Powdercoat rear axle
-Maybe find a NOS DG pipe, looks like they don't make them anymore, or fix the one I have (it won't be purty)
-Powdercoat rear swingarm
-Maybe find Maier front fender
-Hi-Flite tank cover
-Find a good KX cylinder
-New levers
I think that's roughly it for now. I'm a slow worker and I tinker in my spare time so don't hold your breath :postwhore I'm certain the engine probably needs at least a topend rebuild at the minimum as well, no telling what the condition is as it's been 5 years since it last ran. My hope is to find a KX cylinder that I can use, I practically gave away mine a number of years ago (but I'm glad it's getting used).
----------------------
Short story on what I've been up to.
-Bought a Kawasaki KLR650 in mid 2012
-Went on many adventures between 2012 and early 2015
-Sold KLR650 early 2015
-Bought Yamaha FJ-09 4 hours after selling KLR650
-Been road adventuring ever since
-Bought a Polaris RZR800 Robby Gordon Edition in late 2016
-Acquired Yamaha Rhino 660 Special Edition shortly after RZR
There, now we're all up to speed :beer

Glad to see you back!
Good to be back I guess
Decided to turn this into a thread for all my projects. The other project on the table right now is my 110, it's a hodge podge of years that I've averaged into a 1980 model (so says the frame). My biggest issue right now is it's refusing to run and that's most likely because of the carb, cheap Chinese JUNK. I have a 16mm Mikuni carb sitting on my table right now that I'm going to use, problem is the choke is on the wrong side. Having a buddy modify one of my intake manifolds to jettison 45 degrees out the side of the engine to allow full use of the carbs functions. Will also order a new throttle cable, thumb throttle assembly (no twist for me), and a push button kill switch.

Not pictured is the f*$%ing drain plug bolt stripped completely out of the engine case- this is the 3rd engine I've put on the bike as well, the first engine dropped a gear in the trans, the 2nd did something that I can't remember, and now this 3rd boat anchor is just a mess of issues and it's been dissuading me from continuing on with the project. So back to the first engine and it's gears, or lack there of...
http://i283.photobucket.com/albums/kk285/XpressCS/20171001_162900.jpg
Looks like the shift drum may need replacing....
http://i283.photobucket.com/albums/kk285/XpressCS/20171001_162854.jpg
Of course you can't find those anywhere which means I might have to tear down the other 2 engines just to pillage parts from them. Ordered a magneto puller tool (bolt) off of ebay with the claims of it fitting all years of magneto engine ATC110's so we will see how that goes. I'll be sending both the cylinder and the head off to be refurbished, and the case pieces are all going to get a chemical bath to clean them up.
A buddy made mention of him possibly remaking Bandito frames, he has an old one he is going to copy and possibly start offering them- I told him I'm interested as I'd love to rid the bike of the cheesy pressed frame.
And now a happy picture of the 110 since seeing it in this state is depressing me...

Hell let's throw a happy Tecate picture in here too.

A heli-coil should square away your drain plug no problem.

The helicoil I'm not worried about, I can do that no problem, it's the condition of the rest of the engine. I'd like to get an engine rebuilt with a fresh topend to put in it so that's what I'll do with the other engine on my bench.

Does anyone know what the stock bulb style is on the round headlights for the 110?

Alright, had to have one of my old intakes modded to fit the Mikuni (I have several intakes on hand), slapped that sucker on there and threw fuel at it, why hell the darn thing fired right up first pull. It runs, but barely, runs very lean. Will be going up several sizes in jets to see if I can't get the beast to run good, though this engine is probably at the end of its service life- nice big blue plumes of smoke coming out the tail and lots of racket coming from inside.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jIp1SRKpVV8&feature=share
I did huck it around the block real quick, she runs but tends to fall on her face on the gas. Surprising how much torque these things make right off of idle, pulls wheelies for days :TrikesOwn
While I'm here, does anybody have a good diagram as to how the seat latch is assembled? Mine decided to disappear one day and I need to implement a replacement.
