I have several late 80s with spark problems and dont know how to see if i even have power to the "coil" that hooks to the spark plug

You may find more suggestions that you can imagine if you try the

Points? cdi?
what year OR model name, engine size would help dagnose your problem.

Generally, as the flywheel spins, the magnets charge a coil or stator
and it puts out ac current.
Almost impossible to detect with a digital meter but possible if you
have someone spin it for you.

Ac current is changed to dc some how depending on the model,
and then the coil can use it to fire the plug if your trigger mechanism
is working, either points or sensor.
