Tri-z cracked crank cover.

hi guys figured out why my transmission oil was milky, cracked crankcase cover. took it for a spin and tranny oil started flying all over the shop. Was pretty depressed. Anyway ordered another one from Oem yamaha and all gaskets bolts etc etc. But i mainly want to no why this happens?? is it something that can be prevented. bike went really well otherwise shifted beautifully didnt skip a beat. Pretty sure the guy who sold it to me new it was cracked but anyway. Any ideas would be great.

ive had trikes that i hit stumps and rocks and such and cracked the cases. is the area where the crack was protected by the frame or skid plate ?
