View Full Version : I broke it again...
So washing the tri z off today from a ride a couple weekends ago...i find this! busted cyl base stud, i have seen studs break before but normally when torquing or loosening the nut...not after its been torqued down for 6 months of riding..on something that's not a wheel stud..looks like it was cracked for a while and the vibrations got it, no idea when it could have been cracked but sure am glad i used a good sealer on the base gasket...it ran a bit lean but i was taking it easy last time out. Just thought i would share :beer

Since you posted this I’ve been scratching my head trying to figure out what would cause this. The only things I can come up with are:
- It was way over torqued
- It got partially fractured the last time it was disassembled, or assembled
- Your lower motor mounts, or swing-arm bolt/bearings are loose and your head to frame mount is tight
- You are one unlucky guy
When you get to looking at the trike please do tell us what you find, this is just too weird if all else was in good condition.

Any chance you could weld a nut onto the rest of that stud and twist it out?
I think I've heard of that for exhaust studs that have broken off flush with the
aluminum.

Well you came to pretty.much the same conclusion I did, although I fixed the loose motor issues u think this must be a loose thred I did not catch..looking at the stud it appears its been this way for a while..couldent of been to long tho its not rusted on the old break..unless its ss..should check, not really a huge deal I was planing on a fresh bore before the dunes this year...oh well :beer

damn Tri Z's and their vibrations! I can hardly ride those bikes lol Riding Eric's Jekyl big bore pump gas bike around hurts my hands
Just FYI, with those sprock BB jugs, you have to yank all the dowel pins at the case and jug. He machines ..050 (I think) off the bottom of the jug and they wont tighten down if you use the dowels unless you grind the dowels down, so they do not stop the jug from torquing properly.
There not ronnies studs, there some shorter ones I found when I built it..may have been used..cant rememberbut that could explain it, dont know how you could over torque a 10mm stud to that point without striping something first. As far as the dowl is concerned, i think i have them in....but my jug is done a bit differnt from the rest.
