View Full Version : Need alittle help my new(to me) 1986 Honda ATC 200s?
I have a 86' Honda ATC 200s.
I was told it doesn't run but still got it.
I went and bought gas (tank was completely empty) put it in wouldn't start.
Tryed and tryed NOTHING.
So I took the spark plug our sanded it sprayed it with starting fluid sprayed the carb and
Vrrrmmmm starts but for about 7 seconds.
Try again with no spray nothing.
I spray it vrrrmmm starts again.
So I repeat this over and over coming to realize,.it won't start without ether.
And when it starts it only idels for 7-2 0seconds(I timed it).
If anyone can help me point oit what it may be or give me any tips I would be highly grateful for
ANY help.
Thanx

Take the carb apart and clean out the jets. Make sure they're not plugged up. buy a new spark plug. Check the air filter. if it's dirty, clean it or buy a new one. Make sure gas is free flowing from the tank to the carb. If there's not a fuel filter on it, i'd recommend putting one on. That should get it running.

x2 w/ belly.
Those carbs are pretty simple and absolute wqorst case, new carbs that usually work are like 20 bucks.
A good cleaning will make it run.

Gotta agree with the above. When I got my '82 185S, owner said it hadn't ran in forever. Got it to start, but it wouldn't run very long and it ran like crap. Soaked the carb in solvent and ordered a re-build kit, new plug, and trimmed the coil wire so that there was ample amount of copper going into the boot. Runs and idles great now. Good luck!

Agree with the others... Carb, air filter, plug, fuel filter. Especially since the tank was bone dry empty, now your going to have crud floating in the gas for a while, so get a couple filters so you can swap it when it plugs up the first one, or get one that can be taken apart and cleaned, they call it a lifetime fuel filter for small engines and has a two piece aluminum body usually with a removable and washable filter element.
Definitely going to need a carb rebuild for sure! And stop shooting it up with ether, all your doing is killing it using that crap.

X2 with the ether. Good way to burn up the motor. get a small squirt bottle with some gas in it. however, if you clean the carb properly, you shouldn't need anything to fire over. If the gas tank is really dirty ie. rust, chunks, dirt, etc... take the tank off and put some sea foam in it and dump it out. it should take most of the crud out. Take a look at the gas cap vent tube if it has one and make sure that is clear also.

Absolutely... I went to my local Wal-Mart and back to the cleaning supplies isle, for less than a buck you can buy a plastic spray bottle, fill it with fresh gas and now you have something for troubleshooting small engines without harm. If you set it to stream you can squirt fuel right into the plug hole on an engine, and if you set it to spray it works good to wet down the throat of a carb and intake. Ether should only be used on what it was made for, Diesel engines.... At least thats my opinion.

Did the seals look good on the carb? how bad were the jets clogged? Check around on here for proper carb adjustment for your model i.e. float level, needle position, etc.... the air screw generally should be 1 1/2 turn out from the bottom. good starting point. maybe the previous owner messed around with it. is your choke operating correctly?

as stated before.. clean the carb very well. every jet and hole needs to be cleaned... the jets have small holes that have to be clean to run properly. sometimes u have to look at it at a light to see if it is clear... thats what the shop will do ...good luck you will get it..

These carbs can be a pain after sitting... It can take a couple days soaking in carb dip and a lot of work blowing out the passages and using small pieces of wire to clean out everything. If you can't get it an aftermarket carb can be bought cheap enough off ebay. I have used a few of them now, they work great for the money.

It definitely sounds like its a fuel issue..I don't know if this was mentioned but check the float and make sure fuel is getting through that passage alright..in my experiences it usually is something small so I would pull it off again and carefully inspect everything on the carb, than put all the adjustments back to spec

Check the carb boots for air leaks. Does your fuel petcock leak?? If it leaks at all replace it as it wont start good or at all. Clean the carb again just for fun..I once cleaned my carb 5 times and eventually it ran great.....

that is an excellent suggestion... Id sorta forgotten this but especially in the high revving 2 stroke world this can also be the kiss of death...not just a non starting motor....running lean will have a tendancy to overheat your engine..... : ( ...... tick tick tick tick.... BOOM
but it sounds like you are WAY TOOOOOO LEAN
BTW, cheers to SYR

Did you drain the bowl of the carb completely... ???

Putting motor back on in the morning.
I have one last problem now (besides finding a rear tire 22x11x8)
My gears arent shifting now.
Its going down after I shift up one but does feel like its shift when I shift up only shifts down one when I shift it?
Anything to help Belly?

your welcome. Is it slipping out of gear when you try to shift? meaning when you shift from 1st to 2nd, it goes back into 1st gear? or it sits in between the gears and grinds? i'm not familiar with honda transmissions so someone else with experience will have to chime in.

Everything you guys said helped and it's running, ideling, and shifting but...
It's smoking(black smoke)
I know it's either too lean or too rick but how do I correct this issue?

If its not staying in gear its the shift stopper, just have to pull the right cover and look for the shift stopper arm upper left corner and see if its intact with the roller on the end.
If its blowing black smoke its running too rich.
