They're saying to prepare for 36 hrs which means
4 high tide cycles.
They just said State hwys to be closed in Connecticut
to all but emergency vehicles.

Did they really turn off hot water and power in the evac zones in NY?

here is mass we go rain and wind is starting to pick up now. some coastal flooding already but they are saying the next high tide is when the real damaged will happen.

as of now, power is still on. I am sure at some point it will go out and we will be in the dark for awhile.

With the exception of the people very near the coast lines, I actually feel like the Media is really hyping this up and scaring people 300-500 miles inland to go buy generators and supplies..Yeah there may be some minor wind damage inland, but they are making this out to be like that movie wher NYC is buried under 50 feet of snow after a huge tidal wave.

I do know one thing...When the Weather Channel sends that Jim Cantore guy to your town..Get the hell out of dodge..He is like the grim reaper of storms..
That poor dude prolly gets paid like 50K a year to get slammed around on buildings in 75MPH winds..

You guys up through Central PA and Upstate NY best take cover, if she goes straight up the Susquehanna Valley like the charts show its going to get rough, "Agnes" rough we are about 200-250 miles south east of the eye and are getting 40-50mph gusts already with a steady wind of about 25mph it should pick up here a bit just after landfall until she turns north again

My laptop still has a plug in for a copper phone wire and dial up.

I was able to use that with a member in Connecticut last year and keep him
posted about that odd snow storm last year.

His power was out but he had some battery left and a buried phone line
so I was able to keep him posted from the west coast.

Nice to have an old fashioned plug in the wall phone for times like this too.

Not to discount the troubles of those that have been affected harsly near the coast, and I do want to convey my sympathy to those, I still think the media really panicked a lot of people that did not need to be.

Notice now that the event is over, the weather channel people act is if they are coming down off a 88 hour drug hi and approaching hangover stages.

Right now they are estimating Sandy to cost 51 billion.

Katrina was 82 Billion.
I will be headed to lowes next week to pick up my new-returned opened box generator for half price.

You got power?
cell phone modem?

good battery with functional dial up landline?

I got one of those car jumper things that has cig lighter plugs

Super spooky when there's no place to run.

Glad you have some ability for communication.

All I can say is WOW. :wondering 62 people killed (US and Canada) and that is probably not the final count, millions without power and major devastation from a CAT1 hurricane.

They have to alert as many people possible to the coming dangers of a hurricane and the effects of storm surge and high winds. Most of the 62 deaths are from people being killed by falling trees and power lines and THEY were obviously aware of the hurricanes presence. Imagine if this was the early 20th century, no one would have even known. Many people either could not or did not heed the warning about Katrina and look at the chaos that ensued, or you could just blame GW and the government.

For those who are close enough and not impacted by Sandy, maybe take a week off of work and volunteer to help clean up? I would if I was not 2000+ miles from where it made landfall. I am sure one would gain a better understanding of how much devastation these natural events cause.

I lived in Florida for the first 36 years of my life and was lucky to avoid major hurricanes but have seen first hand what they can do and its no joke. I cannot even remember how many times I took the steps necessary to prepare only to have the hurricane go a different direction. I never complained just considered myself, family and friends to be LUCKY yet again. I also do NOT miss hunkering down and preparing for the worst now that I reside in Arizona.

This is the second Hurricane in two years to hit the Northeast and both did significant damage, seems the gulf coast and southern Atlantic states are not the only ones who can be affected by the devastation.

I am NOT trying to stir the pot or call anyone out, I just hope people realize the gravity of the situation.

My comments were not meant to discount anyone affected, and I do understand the scope of damage is pretty vast. IMO, I think it went as well as it could have, and could have been worse..A few more clicks in temperature could have had all that mess burried in 2 feet of snow, as well as the flooding. Those people could be wading through 20 inches of snow instead of 18 inches of water. Or both.
I saw them interview a guy wearing a Mercedes hat, complaining that BOTH of his houses were damaged..That was pretty shallow considering most people affected, may not even own one home to worry about, let alone 2 and a Mercedes..

I too have been through disasters...House fires, roofs blown open by fallen trees, roofs come off to freakish winds and even flooding. I do understand the weight of the situation and the anguish people are going through. It sucks, and once again I will state I offer my condolences to those folks.

My comments were more directed at the corporate marketing campaigns all in the name of profit, preluding the storm.
I know here where I live, they had people clearing shelves of flashlights, generators, can food, and water, and really in this area the media did not need to play it up like they did. That is what I was trying to convey in my statements.

And lets not also forget, about all the people from disasters past..Wildfires out west this year, Katrina, Joplin, and Japan..which was arguably the biggest disaster this planet has ever seen.

I appologize if my comments were mistaken for a lack of compassion to the victims. That was never my intent.

We were wiped off the map twice last year. This one was better. Spent most of the weekend preparing the creeks, and sluces,,and it payed off in spades. White water going THROUGH the pipe is a beautiful thing! Rather than taking out the roads. We were without power 4 days. Our line crews were out preparing for the storm trimming trees Sunday.. Dropped a tree ONTO the lines lol. Killed our power,,got it back on for a cpl hours and then we went black. Not a lot of fun,,but all in all,,turned out great. I have never in my 42 ,ever heard wind like that in my life. ALL night. Was quite a show! Glad all seem ok,,my heart goes out to all those still down.

I can't feel sorry for some of the people I've seen on the news crying that their multi-million dollar BEACH houses have been destroyed. Firstly, if you're going to build your house right on the beach, you have to know that some day it could be wiped out. Secondly, it also means that they're going to have a NEW multi-million-dollar beach house shortly.

Secondly, it also means that they're going to have a NEW multi-million-dollar beach house shortly.

All I can say to that is, most of those aren't multi-million dollar homes, living on the beach is no different than living in Tornado Alley if you ask me... so hypothetically if you get wiped off the map next summer by a tornado, you have family members unaccounted for, your wet, cold and hungry without electric and running water, maybe your beloved family pet got whisked away by the wind and your truck is laying upside down in your pool, your going to be perfectly fine with me coming on here and saying "What a dumb trailprotrailprotrailprotrailprotrailpro fool, he should have known better, he was asking for it and got what he deserved"? ... That's what I thought! I've been through more storms than I care to remember, we lucked out on this one and dodged a bullet, we weren't so lucky with Isabel and Irene although we fared better in those than many of our friends an neighbors and we're about 100 miles inland so its not just the shoreline that takes the hit, not just the rich, storms don't discriminate and if you lose it all it doesn't really matter what you had before the wind and water came, whether you lived in a tent or a condo, if you lose everything you've got its gone and you pick up the pieces and start over. Its not easy for anybody no matter who you are.

good to hear you didn't get hit huffie. what most here don't understand is on the beach your house may be worth a mill plus when across the street it drops to 300- 500 thousand. cross the street again and it drops some more. but hey people please hate. it's not my fault you didn't play the game of capitalism well or made bad decisions in life but please hate on the others that have.
maybe i should hate those in the gulf states that get hit year after year and live below the flood plains. how about those fools that must live in tornado alley and cry like babies when a twister rolls through. why should i care when that 100 year flood hits the rivers in the mid-west, even though they tend to come year after year. and the same goes for the whiners with the droughts. you know whats even worse is those that live in the tinderbox zones. fire why should i care about some fires?
i'll tell you why because their Americans no matter what their homes cost. don't hate me because i've done so well hate yourselves because you haven't. i've done everything right and i'm sorry some of you haven't but please hate.
no my home wasn't a million but 260 thou. so hate me please. my mothers house may of been 1.6 million but she worked her whole life for it so please hate her too. please hate my employees with their 120-160 thousand homes. a little more than an Alabama trailer but hate them please.
hate chris christie for working with obama. the guys just doing his job for the state that elected him and a dam good one at that. so hate away people.
in a few days we'll be voting and from the looks of this site i'll be getting another tax break in which i'll say again please hate some more. hopefully we'll get rid of fema and any other government support for those who loose their homes. god forbid we help each other in bad times as it's better to have than not right??? it's the American way right? maybe the next time a tornado ripps through the mid-west an emergency crew will ask "how much you got" before giving you a hand. and if you have nothing than tough luck. i'm not asking for help i'll cover what i lost and my mothers too. but most of all i'll help others around me who can't and/or get screwed by their insurance. why because i'm an American and that's whats what real Americans do. well that's at least what i thought.
so hate away people it won't get you anywhere.
btw my house in mystic i bought a 2 years ago at an auction for my brother who's in the marines. tommy and julie had a home in Georgia but lost it because of the wars. his girl is in the army and a bill came before congress so service personal could get relief but was shot down as it had no tax breaks for millionaires. so i bought them a home for their wedding present in may. so hate them too for protecting this country and getting screwed in the end. yep thats America folks a bunch of haters

It wasn't that the man was upset about his houses and Benz, it was that he's concerned about his property while other people are losing far more- Loved ones or even their own lives.

There's a HUGE difference between living in "tornado alley" and living on the hurricane coasts. Tornado alley is basically the whole midwest. Even the largest tornadoes are only a half mile wide and your chances of getting hit by one are 1 in a million. I've never even seen one(though I'd love to). How many people on the coast are affected by hurricanes every year? What are the biggest natural disasters caused by? If you live on the coast, for say 20 years, chances are probably 100% that you are going to be hit by a hurricane at some point.

Really sorry to hear that some folks lost property. I just returned home on tuesday after being on Long island for 24 days restoring peoples power. They were hit pretty hard. Very sad to see it first hand. We were in both ends of the spectrum, The Hamptons for 2 weeks and then Queens for 1 week. I have to say the people of Queens lost way more than the Hamptons and they were as nice as could be. Just so thankful that we were there and left our families to help out complete strangers. The Hamptons they were yelling at us telling us we suck and werent working hard enough. We were working 16 hour days seven days a week and sleeping in tractor trailers with about 30 guys in each one. But we didnt care we were there to help and just doing our job. The way some people are talking in this thread remindsme of those people from the hamptons. Just sheer arrogance. Im just a hard working middle class man that was helping out getting treated like crap. We all sad we wished we were in Queens the entire time. These people lost everything and they were offering us coffee and donuts. Just nice to see that there is still people like that in the world. Sorry for rambling but it gets old when you get bashed all the time for just trying to do your job. No matter what you do you cant please those people.

I have done a few storms Isaac for 2 weeks in New orleans Irene for 2 weeks the october snow storm Ice storms But this was the worst I have seen. Sad too when they sent us home people still were without power and probably still are.

That is awesome to hear man. Thank you for all your time and efforts. Get you some rest, you have certainly earned it.
