Neighbors kickstart only 250 es starts great cold.
Little choke and 1 or 2 kicks.

I saw it first hand the other day in the dark and pouring rain
trying to get it under cover.

It had spark but I threw in a new plug anyway and it still had spark,
tiny spritz of start fluid, 10 kicks and I left it in the rain overnight.

Went to push it undercover the next morning and the s.o.b. started
in 1 and a half kicks.

It really wasn't "hot" when this problem happens,
just howver warm it gets with a 5-10 min run so probably technically underwarm.

Any ideas where to look except everywhere?

Thanks

I would take it for a ride get it warm, then get back and shut it off, if it doesn't start then i would start with checking the compression, make sure its not a valve clearance problem. You said it has spark, so doubt its an electrical problem... It sounds like its loosing compression, but not totally sure.

It could be almost anything at this point til you do some detailed troubleshooting.

Long shot... but maybe it has nothing to do with hot or cold but is just intermittent.
My 85 BR will sometimes start on one kick worm or cold and other times I can kick and / or try to jump start it and get nothing.

Looking for answers... I read (on here I think)... and it works but it is bizarre
... shake the piss out of it first.
I mean get it rocking so the wheels come off the ground
I think they said it has something to do with the ball float or something.
Anyway it works most of the time for an easy start for me.
I have not had a chance to look into mine and I think my problem might also just be the petcock needing to be cleaned but I always get it started and it runs fine after that so I have not bothered looking into it further... yet.

Excellent point.
I wonder if valves tighten or loosen when warm / cold.

I think I'll adjust the valves first and report back.
Very frustrating when we need to depend on these things.

More than likely you have a starter jet that needs to be about ,080 or 80 thousands larger. The entire cold start kit is a waste.

Valves are set cold.....

Great thoughts.

Some o the early 85 models had the keihin qa01 carbs with a cold start problem.
and shaking them side to side helps slosh gas in the carb.
I also have one that runs out of gas with the tank half full.
Petcock reserve is plugged.

This is kinda new to me but this was funny with spark and a spritz of start fluid and
it didn't even try to start.

I wonder where the spark advance comes from with these 250 hondas.
I should know by now.
