Edit..Found pics, but i just came home with it. Thought i got a fair deal, and i needed an ice fishing rig. It has a new battery, Axle, rear tires, all bearings, valve job, tune up and fresh fluids. Runs just like a honda with no smoke. All electronics work good. He put a dirtbike front end on it for some reason, and it actually looks pretty neat, but the original lwas included as well. Im looking for any information on the overall dependability of them, as i will be using it for ice fishing, and any tips from the more experienced here. The only real issue is a small dent in the tank, thats immaculent on the inside, and the front fender is roached. All other plastics are nice. Rear brakes hang up just a bit, i suspect a little lubrication will go a long way. All in all i gave 550 for it, and for a running machine, it sounded fair to me. Thoughts? And Thanks!

Take the cap off the rear end and check the oil in the diff for metal particles and water. It would be a good idea to change the gear oil in it, otherwise, they are great machines.

Change the diff fluid often (after every ride) if your in the mud or water. Other than that these machines are great. I am the proud owner of one myself. Not really a fan of that dirtbike front end but for 550 and everything bearing wise replaced i would say that you made out pretty well. Make sure you change you oil filter!!!

On the last couple rear brakes I did, the shaft that runs into the
housing looked like they were painted black and made it hard for the brakes to
release.

I'm assuming it was old, dried out grease of some sort.

It scraped off very easily and I re greased them.

I also added a return spring to the outside but it was obviously not the right way to go.

Best to fix it right.

The 2 springs that hold the shoes together should be enough to
return them perfectly.

x3 on the rear gear oil and be careful with the oil filter sequence.
Improper sequence can be catastrophic.

GREAT machines and an sx with rear racks are hard to find.

Ill be changing back out to the original front end this weekend. Being that it's going to be an ice fishing machine, the rear racks were a requirement, and it's got a tow hitch as well. Rated for 400 lbs according to the tag. Rear Diff oil is new, (80-90?) and i will be going to winter oil this weekend. 5-30 for winter iol right? Thanks!

I seen this one on craigslist.. I have an 85 sx and I use it for ice fishing.. Great in the snow!!! Dont think she will turn very good with the narrow tire and lighter front end especially on ice and packed snow...looks like a good deal though...What part of maine you ice fish???

I live in gray-new glouster area. Crystal lake has become a dead zone, but i try to find new areas every year. Little sebago, sabbathday lake or up in belgrade lakes area mostly. Look me up if you want to get out!

I do most of my fishing on north Pond, part of the belgrade lakes..I have a camp there. Me and my dad caught some pike last weekend. Ya we'll have to get a few atc;s out on the ice this year..
