View Full Version : Need some expert 250es help
Last week my big red was running great, but started smoking a bit. So being the good owner I am pulled the motor and changed the rings and valve seals. Put it all back together making sure the ground was right and wires back in there respective place. Now no fire. Any suggsetions the only thing different is the top motor mount is not on yet nor is the other mounts tight does that have anything to do with the completion of the ground? Thanks for any suggestions.

Could be a bad ground then if you don't have everything tight, get it all tight, go through all the electrical connections again and you should be good to go. The motor and frame need to be grounded together good for the coil to have the ground to the stator as well as the rest of the electrical system.
Thanks when I was re checking the grounds I noticed I had the neutral and the reverse wires swapped them now it's firing rookie mistake I guess haha

Well ya know what they say, you don't learn if you don't make mistakes!!! Good to hear you got it sorted out! Now how does it run??
it runs absolutely great now but the timing chain seems a little noisynow nothing g crAzy loud and Im sure it's plenty tight. the carb needs readjusted but I got all day ttomorrow for that!!

Pretty typical on a 250ES, if i counted all the timing chain repairs i have done i would probably be annoyed, so i won't... LOL
You can try getting a little more out of the tensioner but otherwise run it til your ready to overhaul it further.
yea I just put new rings and balance seals this go round but it still has a tiny bit of smoke so it'll need a good bore and New piston soon. I made I little mistake and put the copper washers between the bolt and pump line instead of line and head I checked your manuals seen I was wrong swapped them and it quietend it down a lot I guess that was blocking a little flow of oil. I've almost got myself talked into trying the 300 swap! lol but for now just riding till I find the end of the world lol.

Awesome, glad the manuals helped you out and sounds like you got it all sorted out. The timing chains on these get a bit of slop and its hard to eliminate all the top end noise on these Honda's, the 200's and 250's always seem to have some noise, although usually the 250 is quieter. You think that 250 is noisy you should get an old 200, they sound like a sewing machine even when together perfect.. LOL

Hehe, yeh, mine sounds like a sewing machine too. Louder than the exhaust but runs great. I really wish Honda designed the camshaft to ride on bearings instead of metal on metal.

well, for good bore, just get in honed by a machine shop, probly dont cost much, and a 300 motor is identical to the 250, the only difference, is the cam shaft, and the top peice to the head, maybe carb to, but im not sure yet, soo instead of buying a full 300 motor, just pick up a cam and top peice of ebay for cheaper
I've heard that before but haven't really looked into it.if the cam gets replaced would it be just bigger jets or the 300 carb work better. I just got a set 27's for it but I want to bee it up a little before I mount them. And I guess I'm just overly worried about the timing. But she runs great so I guess ill just ride till she can't ride no more.
