Well this may be my first post, but I am not new to the world of 3 wheelers. I first rode one about 8yrs ago, and I have enjoyed a few machines since then. Being without a machine for a little while now, I have begun to miss them, so I bought a winter project.

What I bought is a Yamaha 225DX, year unknown for now. Or, more like I bought mostly a 225DX, it is not complete or pretty.....yet. I basically bought 1 and a half parts machines and will complete one. The price was right, thank you ebay, so I couldn't pass it up. I will have it ready for trike fest though.

If anyone has leads on 225DX parts pass it on. Right now I know I need brake controls, plastic, a tank, key, ignition, left handlebar controls, and a header. Once I start tearing it apart to rebuild it I will know more. Pics will be listed soon.

FIRST... Welcome to the board. and GOOD LUCK W/ the DX!!!
I am also a NY guy. I am not sure out in Buffallo. I know of a place in Rochester that has a ton of used parts and a few parts places in Syracuse. If you are into a road trip I can get you the #'s of them. I wish you had posted this sooner I was in Buffallo on Sat nite for the SABRES game. I make it there quite often.

LET ME KNOW IF I CAN HELP

Thanks for the comment Mik6. I too know a guy in Syracuse who has a fair share of parts. I grew up outside of Syracuse and have moved out to Buffalo. If you want to pass along info for the guy in Roch, that would be aprreciated.

Well in the process of disassembling the trike, I was able to read the sticker, it is a 1984 YTM 225DX.

And the parts list is growing.......

One week into my project and some of the trike is done. Now that everything is cleaned and painted, I am going to go through the engine. Here is a pic as of tonight.

Well as if my 225 project isn't enough, yesterday I took ownership of a 1985 YTM 200. It is more complete than the 225, but it does need the engine reassembled. It ended up being a project that someone else never finished, Winter project #2 :D

Well rings and gaskets are ordered, so over Christmas the top engine will be cleaned and rebuilt. Hopefully the engine and rear end will be back on the trike after the New Year. Pics will be posted then.

I flipped the forks and changed the bars about a week ago....right after I took the pics. Thanks for the reply though. Shows that someone else knows their Yamaha's.

Well I may have not done it the truely proper way, but I first washed and degreased the frame then sanded it to rough it up. I used a glossy black rustoleum paint, the brush on, not the spray because it is thicker. 3 coats did it for me. Sure it will stratch off over time, any paint will, but I just want it to look nice for that after picture. If you want it to last longer the only option that I know of would be powder coat. $$ Too much for a machine that will be used regularly. Good luck. I just figured that I want to take everything off the frame to clean it and make sure it is functioning properly, so why not paint the frame. I am hoping to bring it to trike fest.

i agree with you a 100% olderfox ! for what i am gonna do with my machines a spray can paint is a great way to go. i personally like using the epoxy spray can paint ( it's on the store shelves as appliance paint ).
same stuff thats on your cookstove or fridge,,, tough stuff but still spray can price.

well i learned something tonight i'd rather not have learnd ( lol )
that epoxy paint ,,,, the type i have used on 3 frames with great results,,, don't put engine high temp clear on it !!!
i tryed a test spot with the engine clear ( i polished my r motor and clear coated it with it - looks wonderful ) on my ultra smooth black gloss finish frame and now have a crinkled, cracked antique lookin effect.
( i can come up with some other words to describe better but they'd just get deleted - lol )
well,,, now i know and wanted to pass along.
not sure what colour your gonna go with JW125M + Andrew ,,, black is available along with off white ,,, that's about all i have seen in this epoxy paint.
sevral of the parts catologs have factory epoxy paint availabe ( PJ-1 brand and it's really good too ,,, at least the black high temp engine spray paint is ( get 2 cans for the motor ). leading atv dealers normally stock or can get that paint too.

okay ,,, don't try to clear coat the epoxy ,,, you won't much be to happy.

I wish after a couple of weeks that I had more pics to post, but I don't.

Over Christmas I took apart the engine to do top end rebuild and replace some gasket maker with gaskets. I was pleasantly surprised to find a good condition top end. Valves look good, low carbon buildup, good piston and cylinder. I honed it but can't put it back together because I was shipped the wrong rings......grrrrr. I was also glad to see no unextected sludge or anything when I took apart the side cases. If everything goes well this should be a strong little runner. :)

It will be a couple of weeks before I get back to finishing up then engine. Then it will be reassembling and more pics.

I have most of the missing parts, but I still could use a seat and exhaust. The foam for the seat needs to be complete, but the cover doesn't need to be. PM me if you can help.

Oh and pics for the YTM 200 should be starting soon.

Hey jeswinehart, what kind of engine clear did you use? And you just put it on bare metal? Does it keep the metal from rusting? I know the most motors don't rust, like my zinger motor, nothing will rust but the cylinder head. So I could just strip it and put on clear, and have the polished look without it rusting? thanx oh yeah I saw pictures of that motor after it was sandblasted.Do you have any pics of it finished? Long Live the Spray Cans lol.

Well, here are the rear fenders for the 225, half done. It turns out that there are a lot of stress marks under all the faded plastic that I sanded off. Hopfully I will have the front and tank done tomorrow.

hondatrikesrule22, it's made by plastic coat and cost about 7.50 a can.
goes along ways though ( and hard to take a picture of - lol ).
and yes,,, i put it right over the bare alu after i buff it out.

i definitly want to see how those fenders turn out thefox !

When I clean fenders that look like that I use a razor blade to scrape the crud of first to save sanding time.By the way I hate sanding ofcourse :( My next project is to see if a 350 shaft drive yami motor will fit in one of my 225dx frames :-D I allready have the motor and a frame and probably everything to do it so, Did someone say ytm350dxlr :?:

Well it's been a little while due to no time to work on it, but at least the engine is back together. It isn't too clean yet, but that's what happens when it has been down in my dirty basement the last few months. Hopefully I will be able to get it out soon to wash it. I just need to get some friends over to help me carry this beast out. So stay tuned. I'll post again when more work is done. At least classes are over in a week.
