View Full Version : What gives?? SX transmission issue....

So, the trans on my SX shifts unusual... Not like the famous broken #21 pin (played that game on my BR) all the gears are there, and in the right spot, but feels like the detents are m.i.a.? Haven't opened it up yet, just curious if anyone else has done this one yet...? Thanks!

Perhaps the detent springs on the shift shaft have broken.

It's possible... But, the shifter has spring pressure up and down, just no detent.... When it pops into gear, it also is in gear before you release the shifter. If you hold it up with your toe, it's still wanting to go. I know the clutch is at the end of its life (but doesn't slip) perhaps the centrifugal clutch is going too?

There is a spring on the shifter mech inside the housing that returns it to the middle possition.
There is also a shifter paw in there that locks it into position for each gear. I am sure Flyin was referring to this being the part that is bad. I know it would be the first thing I check with those issues posted above.

I don't think a bad centrifugal clutch would affect your detents. Never been into an SX motor or tranny, but looking at the microfiche my first guess would be that:

1. Something is broke in the area of (9) shifter drum, (10) shifter collar, (11) ratchet pawl, (12) pawl plunger, and (15) pawl plunger spring. Leaning towards (11), (12), and (15). These are smaller parts, more prone to wear, damage, and breaking. Possibly what FlyingW was talking about?

2. The stopper(16) spring (17) broke or the bolt (32) broke or came out

I would drain the oil first and see if any evidence comes out with the oil. I'm thinkin yer gonna have ta pull that right side cover. :(

These are just my WAGs, worth every penny you paid for them ;)

Make sure you update the thread so we know what was wrong for future reference.

Hey Thorp, does the shifter stay in in its neutral position meaning you can lift the shifter and it returns to its neutral position and likewise when you push it down? Have you messed with or checked the auto-cluch adjustment?

Take off the left cover (do not take out the counter shaft with the 3 allen head bolts) just the cover and I bet you will find the issue.

Lots of great suggestions.
There seem to be only 1,2,3,4, or 5 things to look at under that cover and
no special tools.
Best to have the trike dead leve so the shift shaft washers tsay in place and the
splined arm under the Other cover stays put too. Plug the internal case holes with something in case you drop any little parts.

I'm picturing a shift drum stopper come loose but only had that happen on 110/125.

If you take the cover off, look at Both threaded pins.
One is buried inside the end of the shift drum.
Mine was loose and bent about .003" and I could only see it by putting it in a drill and watching it wobble.
I'll post the part numbers if you need them.

Kinda sounds like that side cover wants to come off but there are quite a few of us who have been in there. Try the search key for some great pictures. keyword 'shift' 250es or sx. or simplar combo.
I posted quite a few and FW has even better pix.

New gaskets are nice to have.
I just bought the 2 pins and got another shift shaft from reading about what commonly goes wrong.
Plus I have a few of the 250 models so the parts will be around. Cheap too.

Good luck and please keep us posted.
and yeah, x2 with DC.

I have been into both sides on my ES motor, not scared of it, just thinking out loud... It does have spring pressure both up and down, just missing the click... Guessing the centrifugal clutch is going too, because when holding the shifter up or down, it doesnt disengage the transmission at all. The auto clutch feels solid, but is at the end of its adjustment, but doesnt slip through any of the gears. May pull it apart next week and see what I can find. And the kicker bearing needs to get done when I pull the right side cover. Then its about done! Stupid broken leg has pretty much stopped all my wrench turning for the last 3 months...

Lift or depressing the shifter disengages the auto clutch. ;)

Gotcha, focused on the wrong clutch! It's suppose to disengage, but not doing so on this machine right now...

Could be a result of being at the end of the adjustment you mentioned in an earlier post.

He must not have been on the ladder.:wondering

Does the ladder provide better access for fisting? :naughty:

Being in an elevated position facilitates fisting operations. an ample amount of scooby lube also helps.

So it seems, all my transmission issues... (not to be confused with fisting issues) seem to go back to the P.O. Seems as though he didnt have the shifter shaft in the right spot, so number 19 wasnt riding on number 10... Price of a gasket... Easy fix! (I can tell the p.o. was in there due to the large quantity of silicone... Bastage)

Lol nice work. I had a similar thing with my 86 250es engine in great shape... They forgot to put the pin in for the electric start... then tried to use it for a week or something. Almost ate though the cover before I got it and fixed it :(. Oh and the side cover wasn't on stright, so they put extra RTV on it to seal it since they didn't put the shifter in the right spot on mine either! Shifting problem and an unknown electric start problem fixed for me :).
