Man am I excited! Ive always wanted one of these since I was like 8. I found one for $600 that needs some work. Im sure with some elbow grease and new parts she'll look good and be ready to ride soon. (and with the help of 3ww lol).
It was running the day or two prior of posting, per the owner..He went to fire it back up and poof, no spark..stator he says looks real bad.
Here is some of the things I gotta get
Front/Rear bearings
Brakes need going through
Front fender (rear is "usable" but may swap it out to look pretty)
New Headlamps
Stator ( I hope thats all but we'll see)--replacement/upgrade advice ???
Rear tires - Razr/Holeshots 20"
There is ALOT more I plan on doing to get it really looking good, but this will just be to get it trail worthy. I plan on new seat/decals/tank work/powdercoating and frame strengthing in the near future. ANY adivce is a big help...Its my first rebuild project. As far as the stator the previous owner bought one for a 85, but said it wouldnt work. Should/can I buy a brand new one from Honda or buy a a used ebay? I also heard/read here the cdi can be swapped with a 99-04 400ex direct swap if I need it. No spark SUCKS..:Bounce

It wasnt posted as running in the craigslist ad. Thats on me, I worded it wrong. It was running a day or so prior. Sorry about that. I cant wait to get started on it though. Is there options for me for the ignition components? As for a cdi, heard a 400ex is plug and play up to 04. What about the coil/ stator and the misc stuff. Does anyone make em new or is there newer models that will work with it? I will get more pics and updates asap..

Great project you have there. Make sure you get a new chain and inspect the sprockets. Pick up a case saver too. I just got done rebuilding a 85' and it was a lot of fun. Check the frame for cracks. Also, check the steering stem bearings. probably original and no good. All balls bearings work great. good luck on the build.

As far as case savers, is there a specific one better than the other? I will picm up a set of the all balls bearings for the steering stem when i buy the front/rear wheel bearings. Which chain/ sprocket should I go with? Im planning on running a 20" holeshots/razrs setup for trail riding/playin around. Any other tips on what to get?

The stock gearing will work fine. If you feel you need more low end, got a tooth down on the front sprocket. more speed, go up in the front. They sell a case saver at the store here. Something is better than nothing. I would go through the forks and atleast put some new fork oil in. I used 20wt which makes it very firm but handles good. depends on how much you weigh. me and my buddy both weigh 205 and when a smaller rider takes it out, they say it's too stiff. other than that have fun with the build

Looks about the shape mine was in, and listed as non-running. Got it for $260, tipped it sideways to the left, and kicked it, fired up 2nd kick lol.... helps when they have gas :).
Anyway, are you sure the stator is bad, did you test it?
I would first check the plug, possibley change it in any case since they are cheap.
If still no spark, check if your getting power to the coil, or flat out test the coil/cdi
Stator would be the last thing I would look at after wiring / switches.
I might have some spare parts if your not in a big hurry to get it going top notch. I have parts I need to install/swap on my 86 including the engine thanks to someone with a welder... Might have a spare stator when I'm done :).
Good luck with the build.

There is a difference in 85 and 86 flywheel and stators. You have to use the 86 style to run the 400ex cdi. Have you try pull starting the 350x? Sometimes when you get the motor spinning fast enough they will start sparking. Best thing you could do is go get you a cheap multimeter and check your electrical so your not just randomly buying parts you don't need. I myself would check the stator first then coil/plug wire. Theres no way to test a cdi with out using a known good cdi. Your going to have to down load a manual for your 350x they have all the ohm specs so you know if the part is bad or not. Monroemike on here is the man to ask when it comes to manual downloads!

yeah Ive had to pull my buddys warrior because the pickup went bad, it would only start if you pull it fast. it didn't run good at low rpms either. oh and i also have a manual i could send you.
checking with a multimeter helps a lot but Ive seen them read good and still be garbage but its rare

Cool thx guys for the input. I will go pick up a good multimeter at the autoparts store. Ryan , can you send me that manual. I will pm ya. ..
Ps2fixer I will get ahold of ya about that stator you might have left over.
Does anyone know if a 85 pick up will work on a 86? I know the other parts are not swapable between the two years, but what is? Thats the better question when it comes to ignition/engine.
Can you buy a stator brand new from honda? I found a couple part number(2 different) for stators in the parts manual for this 85-86 models. I searched and a place has them brand new ready to ship (oem honda parts!) Am I dreaming or this correct? Can you buy the ignition parts new still or cross reference them to other models/years??
Great build. Im sure you will have that beast fired up and ready to ride in no time. My next trike is going to be an 86 350x too. Always gets me hypped to see a 350x thread. Good luck.

You can download a 350x manual here:

Good luck with the build, I always wanted a 350x... I think it will be my next buy if I can find a reasonably priced one.
