Are the cdi boxes the same for 85/86 ? What about the complete electrical system , stators , coil , flywheels , harness all the same .

Yes the CDI boxes are the same as are some of the other items..not that I knew the answers to your question but I looked them up.

Any time I am trying to determine if there is a compatible donor machine in my shed or online for another machine I use bikebandit.com

Just look up the OEM part from the fiche for both machines and compare the part numbers..double check all your parts using this method and avoid buying stuff that doesn't fit.

I assume that is what you are doing? And we both know sellers will say anything to sell..so be sure and double check on them. You'll never be wrong..

Stators and flywheels are different for sure. There's some good info here:

I don't know about the rest.

My 85 has an 86 engine in it with the 86 stator and flywheel plugged into the 85 harness. Runs and lights fine which makes me assume the CDI, harness and regulator are the same but you know about ASSume.

Not to be disagreeable with 'JB' but the bike bandit fiche says that the flywheel and stator ARE the same part number for the 85/86 models...

Perhaps back in the day they were different in some way, but do remember manufacturers regularly create change ups to reduce their replacement part manufacturing..the OEM numbers are now the same (though unavailable)

Doug you are right. Originally the stators were different but the 85 stators had problems. In 86 Honda changed the stators to make them more robust. The flywheels also changed. The CDI, harness, and ignition coil are all the same. Service Honda still lists both part numbers as being suitable substitutes to eachother but both are are discontinued anyway. The same applies to the flywheel. The thing to remember is to use an 85 flywheel with an 85 stator and likewise with the 86. The 85 stator is easy to identify. The coils are not sealed. They are bare wire coils.
