hello all
i am new to this forum, and would love some assistance. I recently purchased a 82 honda 185s from a friend for 50 bucks. Brought it home and completley dissasembled it to rebuild it. it did not run before i bought it. the owner said it had no spark. so took it home got a new spark plug and checked for spark and BAM! it has sure did have spark. but wouldnt start. so after i completley rebuild the whole thing i went and bought an 84 200s motor for it. put it in and still no dice on starting. ive checked the carb cleaned numerous times. it has spark. ive checked timing, wires, and valves. All seem to be in spec. i bought it because im a new student at MMI in pheonix and wanted my first project to be a little on the easier side. well now im having doubts at all about it lol. please help with anything that you might think i have missed or overlooked. thank you all
steven

You need 3 basic things for a gas engine to run... air/fuel mix, compression, and spark. According to your right up, you should have compression (rebuilt it), and you verified spark visably, so are you 100% sure it is getting good fuel?

A trick I learned from my dad is to stick a map gas torch (not lit) in the carb and try to start it. It should run/idle even when it is flooded. If no luck at all, I would say the spark is weak or the plug is messed up in some way. What color is the spark, white/blueish? orange/redish?

One more thing you could try, pull starting it behind a quad in 2nd or 3rd gear. Sometimes spinning up the engine fast enough, it will run, if so it would seem to be some sort of ign issue (coil, cdi, etc).

Good luck, let usk now what you find.

ive checked compression and is good. i do have spark. its a white blueish spark. not sure how WEAK the spark is dont feel like feeling it lol. and i took the carb off to clean again and the intake port to the motor is bone dry so im not sure why its not getting fuel. the spark plug is brand new and has never been in while the motor has been started but while i pull it ill take the spark plug out and the end will be completly black within 2 or 3 pulls. and ive also tried towing it behind my truck to get it started and still nothing :( thank you for you help if you have any thing else please let me know.

Ok so your not getting fuel.. I had this issue once to. Sense the carb is cleaned check the fuel line going from tank to carb. Is that line kinked in any way? Take the tank off where it normally sits and rest it on the seat so you know it's not kinked.
Check the petcock, remove it and see if it's dirty. Once you take it off (don't put your mouth onto the white piece unless you like gas lol) but blow into it. Make sure the petcock is turned ON by the way haha easy mistake as I've done it a few times. On the left side of the handlebars is the Run, Off switch set to off? Once again easy mistake. Those are good and easy places to start for you!

Good luck, and Welcome to 3WW!!!

Hmm are you using the same carb for both engines? My logic is thinking fuel delivery to the carb, is there an in-line fuel filter? Maybe it is plugged. What does the inside of the tank look like? Rust? There is a screen for the pick up in the tank that could get plugged as well. If your using reserve, try using 'on' instead with enough gas in the tank. Wouldn't be a bad idea to pull the line off the carb and check fuel flow in each spot. My 250SX is plugged for the "on" spot inside the petcock. You should get a clean solid stream coming out of the line.

Just as a side note, my dad and I ran around trying to figure out a similar issue where the 250SX I have now wouldn't start. Some times it would splutter and die, would run on map gas fine. Figured out... you need quite a bit of gas for it to pick up any, even on reserve.

It sounds like your spark is fine, normally it is judged by the color @ factory speced gap on the plug from my understanding.

when i first got the atc put all back together i had tried to start it and it started with like the 3rd pull for about 2 sec adn died since then wouldnt start again. there is no kink in the lines anywere and the carb will fill up with gas easily. the petcock is new but havnent check the fuel tube inside the petcock ill take a look but the gas tank had a little rust i since cleaned and lined the tank so there shouldnt be anything clogging it. and yes the switches are on and fuel is on. lol. i just cant figure out why it wont get gas from the carb to the motor. and yes the carb is from the 185s motor but is now installed in the 200 motor.

When you cleaned the carb, did you pull the jets out as well? Blowing compressed air with carb clean helps a lot. Another thing I have heard of but never done my self is soak the carb parts in seafoam, drain/blow off and assemble.

Yes I have cleaned the jets as well. This is why I'm lost I can't think of anything else

try starting it with the gas cap off or loose. the breather tube might be plugged. If that doesn't work, take the carb apart and clean it again.

Alright I'll try that when I get home. But if it is closed would it allow fuel to get to the carb?

if the cap isn't breathing, it won't allow fuel to flow. pull off the fuel line connected to the carb and see if the fuel is flowing freely.

I remember when my gas cap was plugged It would start but bog and die. Right before it killed I quickly twisted off that gas cap and it sounded like normal. But if your carb has fuel it would still start I would think. Have you smelt your spark plug? Does it smell like gas? Plug isn't fouled is it?

That's another thing it smells like gas so I'll put a new on in and it will fowl in a few pulls and still won't start
