Hey guys I know I had posted about an 1st gen 250r before I called. Well ran across an 85 tri z offered the guy 250 for it and am getting it this weekend. Seats nice and the fenders have a little fade but no cracks. The motor needs a top end on it, I had contacted the original owner before this guy got it and said it ran but he put the wrong size piston in the top end. :/ so now it's apart and I will be brining it back to life. Couldn't pass the deal up. New to yellow to me what could I expect out of this machine in comparison to my 350x or my friends 86 r? And how about finding top end parts for these things say a jug and matching piston? I'm a 2 stroke fanatic due to the love of vintage sleds always wanted a 2 stroker wheeler.
Thanks guys

It's not too difficult to find a top end & piston at all. All new bearings and seals can still be ordered from Yamaha or online, All Balls, Weisco, and Boss Bearings sell the main bearings.
I'd suggest looking into having a phase 2 modification done if your looking to go fast! Look up the Yamaha Wrench Report, lots of good info for the tri z.
DG Exhausts and Silencers are available, Boyesen & V Force Carbon Fiber Reeds are good replacements over stock.
Good link for your project:

Progressive springs for the shocks are supposed to be good too, I'm still waiting to rebuild mine.
I'm rebuilding my 85 Z slowly check it out: http://www.3wheelerworld.com/showthread.php/151380-My-Tri-Z-Winter-Restoration
I've never messed around with the Hondas myself so don't how to compair them.

OK slow down guys. lol Best thing for that yamaha is OEM main bearings and seals!! have the jug inspected by a machinist, depending on the bore it can be rebored or just honed if not badly damaged. Have a new rod pressed on as there may be damage from the wrong size piston. Dg pipe is ok Jemco or Phase 5 if you can afford it are better. If you are just looking to throw it together ebay is your best bet. If your looking for Quality show work look at zmpolaristech or Bryan Raffa's machines and many more we love our Tri-Z's. some even have them inked on themselves :beer

tri-z ripper is right on there, I've been in a zone with buying upgrade after upgrade...lol... If you want a used OEM connecting rod and bearings (bearings & seals have very low hrs) ill give them to you for free just cover the shipping. I installed those Boss Bearings n sesls on my last top end build, not long ago... The rings stuck in the piston cause I didn't hone the cylinder.
The rod looks good, I bought it from Mosh along with the crank, it's recently been replaced w/ a Hot Rods Kit & new bearings. Just PM me if u want them. :beer
Congrats on your Tri Z!

Thanks guys! I'm just about to leave to pick up this machine ill post some pics of it when I get back. And 3wd I will gladly take you up on the offer if it is needed I will closely examine this bottom end and this top end. Be prepared to tell me if I got ripped off haha. These machines are far and in between here in the great state of North Dakota.

For less than 300 you can't go wrong, I paid 1200 for mine less than a year ago and tore it all down replaced nearly everything. You got a good start, my problems with my engine was basically lack of experience wrenching and maintaining basically everything.
I've still got the thrust washers and all seals for the main bearings, seals can be bought seperatly also... The bearings only have around 2 or 3 tanks of fuel run thru the trike before I split the case again.

Well picked it up the guy was great. Gave me 50 back and said to keep it for the time and effort to go get it. It came with an extra set of tires on the gold rims and of course what any wheeler cant go with out TrailPros. I also received 2 extra motors heads, Jugs, extra light bezel. 2 exhaust. a carb. extra front fender. A bunch of stuff. He also said if he ever gets the other 2 rolling chassis Tri-Z he would give me a call to get them. I looked through my cylinders I have one that looks to be useable. One is shot. One has a power valve on it. So I am going to take it up to the machine shop tomarrow and have them measure my bore so I can get the "Right Piston" on it's way. I checked the crank and rod on this thing. It is tight and is straight as can be and dosent show any wear or odd warping on it. I also noticed I'll need some parts to put this thing together. Like the head nuts. and the base nuts. need a throttle and cable which im thinking motion pro twisty like the 350x. Also dont have radiator shrouds but that dosent bother me until it is running. But let me know what you guys think. $200 I thought was a great deal.162230162231162232

I have yellow ones.
Ok that'd be great if I could get a shipping quote I could get you the money ASAP.
Now if I could get a little luck locating the nuts and washers to bolt the cylinder and the head down and a throttle with a cable that'd be great!
Thanks for the input feel like i got a good deal. I was sitting here thinking what is the diffrence between the 85 and the 86 besides color?

Well brought the cylinder up to the machine shop today and got it measured. It measured 68.275 mm. So should I bore this up to the 68.5 or would just a hone work? Thanks.
3 Wheel Drive
02-04-2013, 12:15 PM
Close enough to 68.5 to bore it up I'd say, you can get a top end kit with all new gaskets, piston & everything for around $170.00 on eBay.
Look in the middle of this thread, it has pics from the service manual for the tolerances the shop will need.

I owe you 1 3WD That is what I needed! I talked tot he my machinist after I took it to the welding/machine shop He had the tools to do the measurement but they dont do motors. He remeasured the cylinder and it will be in tolerance of running the std piston Next time it comes apart it will be bored. For a hone and get a piston coming. I can't wait to hear my 2 smoke run! Getting all antsy in my pants! My tax return needs to hurry up so I can get parts coming! By the way 3WD That thing is going to be one sweet machine your building!

Nice, you've got lots of life left in that one for sure. I've read around here that the best pistons to buy are the OEM ones, not Weisco. Something about the type of metal they are made from or something, standard 68mm pistons can be had for 50 bucks! Those head bolts are .99 cents each on that website above, check it out!

Oh ya did some digging through my parts I got and I happened to find all of my nuts I'm in search of. Did some check there found the twisty I want but I can't seem to find a throttle cable. Checked cheapcycle, rocky mountian, and denniskirk. Can't find it. Found one on the feebay I'm watching right now. Oem piston at that price can't go wrong. He's Is honing the cylinder with the fine stone so can't wait to see it when I get it back.

Well went to the garage to look at the other 2 motors today. Found out one of them is a yt 250 with power valve it is complete looks like it'd need a boring and a piston. Turns over great. The second motor is a triz 250 bottom end locked up. And looked at my good bottom end to find out I'm missing half of the motor mount that bolts onto the head. That crank is super clean and turns over very nicely. Just wanted to double check that.

I was sitting here thinking what is the diffrence between the 85 and the 86 besides color?
The major difference is the tranny is a 6 speed in the 86. Parts are a little hard to come by though for the tranny. The fork Diameter is different too, 86 is bigger same size as the 85-86 R's (therefore tripples and fork caps are different), different style coolant bottle. I am sure there are a few more but those are the majors ones I know of.

Thanks for all the positive imput guys Just keeps me pumped up! Got my cylinder back from the machinist today! He did a nice job on it not going to lie! Have a new tiwst throttle and cable coming for it. Once tax money comes through I will be ordering all the other parts to get it running. Right now it is just a waiting game. Went to put the gold rear rims on it today just to see what its going to look like just to find out it is running diffrent hubs. The studs are way bigger and the hub sticks out over top the base of the threads for the castle nut. Now the search game begins for hubs with lug nuts. haha.

Well yup I am having some major brain farts right now. So I have been looking at pistons and was wondering, What is the .20 bore is 68.20mm? I have been looking at pistons for it and I see from some people .20 over is 68.20mm and other are saying .20 equals 68.50mm. I dont know why I am having issues figuring this out. Thanks guys
Well I figure it out haha so dont owrry about it.

We definitely have to get together for a ride sometime, I just picked up my z last weekend, here is my first ride pick I know it's missing the shroud cover but I believe the cover is still in billings as the guy I bought it from changed the spark plug before I got there, and he forgot to put it back on.163389 Did you get the rims or anything yet from the post office as I haven't heard back from them yet, if you didn't I will go down and try and figure something out that can be done.

Nice looking machine! And yes we do need to get together to ride. Not much to ride around here. Bismarck has the desert which is fun to ride. How about there? And no I have not heard or seen any rims come my way. Have a feeling it was another USPS mess up.

Here I have quite a few small areas to ride , but then there's lions back out in the badlands, and then there is also the slough which is at the Yellowstone river. Lions back has some serious hills to climb and miles of trails, plus some tracks that people have cut into the ground from years of riding. At the slough we have about 5 square miles of trails going through the woods across the the river bed and through the slough to run plus we camp at both places all weekend long so it's a hell of a party and play weekend.

Well took it out to do some lugging on the motor to break the rings in just dinking around and I am impressed with the power this thing is making! Ran great. pushed it into the garage idling and now it won't start it sputters a little bit every 3rd kick but wont catch. Thinking the old carb gets to come off again.

You're supposed to license them for off road, but very rarely do you have anyone having a problem with them not licensed especially three wheelers, none of mine have off road tags. here is a link to lions back video, where I am pointing out the trails and different areas where they are sorry about the sound was a lil windy
