i am building an 84 tecate with a few upgrades like a kx cyinder (ported) a pvl ignition and a shaved head. i am wondering if the dg pipe is even worth investing in. of course iwould rather have a vintage pipe like a bills or something like that but they arent veary availible. so is a dg pipe worth the cash or am i better off to wait for a good vintage pipe or try to build my own?
Thanks

My opinion, you'd be better off waiting for something else. I wasn't impressed at all with the DG.
Also, it's your build so do what you want, but I wasn't very impressed at all with the KX jug versus the Tecate. I'll take the engineers that built these bike's opinions over anyone else's any day.

a kx jug should gain on the big end and lack on the bottom due to the port design right?

there is a vintage pipe on ebay now for cheap. It needs some work but is very repairable

Should in theory, yes. I've heard claims of guys making big power with the KX jug, which is why I tried that. It was all the rage for a while there. All I know is this- I took my ported Tecate jug off and replaced it with a brand new 84 KX jug. I did all I could to dial it in, but it never made the power that my ported Tecate jug did. The Tecate jug was a real "punch in the face". Ungodly power whenever you wanted it, wheelies everywhere, yet enough low-end grunt to billy-goat up hills at probably 6-800 RPM. I put the KX jug on expecting an even bigger punch in the face but less bottom end. All I ended up with was a loss of power across the RPM range. I wasn't impressed at all. I have a theory as to why the KX jug was that way, and I'll tell you what that is.
My theory is that the differences between the two jugs (KX and Tecate) were there for a reason. On a bike you have less rotational mass, less traction, and less unsprung weight. On a bike when you smash the gas, the tire will spin. The KX jug is ported to really open up at higher RPM's. When you take that same porting and put it on a trike, you now have a heavier bike all around, more traction, more rotational mass, and more unsprung weight. I feel as though the porting on the KX jug can never live up to it's potential with the increase in all of these things. It just fell flat on it's face for me. I used to out run everyone with my Tecate jug. Not so much with the KX.

I had the same pipe with the same problems. The dent was easily removed with compressed air and heat and I just welded a new stinger on and ground the welds smooth. for under 100.00 that pipe is a steal

I feel the exact opposite of Fabiodriven.. I've ridden a lot of different Tecate's. KXT or KX cylinder, ported vs not ported, even a 200cc Selvy's Tecate.. My Klemm Research ported KX cylinder with a 41mm Mikuni flatslide did everything I asked it to for 26 years on the same bore. When I traded it it still had 180 lbs of compression. If I ever own another Tecate it will have a KX cylinder that was ported by harry Klemm on it.. The power is mostly mid top but it just pulls and pulls like a freighttrain.. Everyone that rides it says the same thing. If you decide to go with the KX cylinder, send Harry Klemm an e-mail.. The guy makes magic happen with these cylinders..
I also owned a KX cylinder that was hogged out by Bob Troxell of Wichita, KS back in the 80's, it had a motoplat ignition and I put my 41mm flatslide on it and it was like trying to ride a bucking bronco.. front wheel up in all gears.. When it hit the powerband just make sure nothing was in front of you it just moved out.. I got a hold of Bob Troxell who ported it and he still had the paperwork on the portjob and who it was for. It was used for flat track around the mid west and did pretty good from what he said.. Most porters number the jug under the intake.
I also wasn't impessed with the DG pipe. But it is better than the oem pipe.

Bob Troxell said he puts the "?" on the side of the intake just to keep them guessing.. lol

There's some good info for ya either way. There is a good chance I just never got mine dialed in the right way. Also, my KX jug was untouched, never been ported at all. And I never had a 41mm carb which I'm sure might have had something to do with my results as well.

You can always go with a Jemco pipe. Cost you around $400. Send them an email and ask a few questions and they offer a few different options with the pipe as well.

I think I got the quote for one that was plated or chromed. Not sure as it was a few years ago. Just pull the trigger on it and get one made.
