it just slips over the shaft... but as you know alot of times they are stuck pretty good.... i usually have more problems with the axle shaft not un-threading out of the fork...good luck

Anything that is stuck I usually gently tap with a brass hammer and/or brass punch. The brass won't damage or mar parts; but don't hit too hard as to break something right off. It's worth a shot. Everyone should have a brass hammer and a brass punch in their toolbox.

I had the same issue. Mallet Is your best friend. I wouldnt hit anything with a solid hammer lol 30 yr old parts don't like it. That's when things break.

had same problem with a 250 sx front end. had to beat the tar out of it but eventually got it. brass hammer is nice but i needed big sledge and put it in a vise. just do not strike directly with steel hammer it will mushroom the threads or just ruin them. use a wood block between hammer and axle.
i like the idea of trying a shop press, i didnt have access to one at the time. just be careful with the setup because the brake cover brakes easy, maybe try leaving all on rim and put in press. just be careful how much pressure you use i have steel and aluminum practically expload in shop press' when people are careless. again use a wood block between press and axle threads.
good luck
