Question on 1984 250r

A guy wants to trade his 84 atc 250r for my 2002 YZ250F. The value on my bike is about $ 2000. I have seen these trikes around 2500$ in this area if they are in good shape. The pics I have seen of this trike it does look good but I am not happy with back plastics. So they need replacing, also he says it needs front brakes and the clutch needs work. He says it is stuck engaged. I am able to tackle some wrenching but have never worked on a clutch. Any ideas about the clutch would be appreciated. I will not be trading unless there is some $ or something interesting kicked in.

The bottom end sounds like it will need to be split. Sounds like you would have a major project. I would value the trike @ $500 tops since you will have to buy fenders, gasket set, front brake system, and what ever you find in the tranny.

Not sure why you'd have to split the cases if the only problem is a stuck clutch... (unless you mean the transmission is stuck engaged - but I read your post to mean the clutch was stuck engaged)

It could be as simple as the clutch cable broken, not attached properly or requiring adjustment; but that's doubtful.

More likely the lifter mechanism is damaged or the clutch plates/friction discs are sticking together, but it's easy to open and work on the clutch... you don't even need to remove the engine.

Yeah! He said it was stuck engaged. According to the owner clutch lever has no resitance at all. Splitting the cases was not even a thought to me. That starts to add up cost wise. I thought replacing clutch plates would be the worse case. Thanks guys

I put that as to expect the worst. You get it thinking it is the cable or lifter rod and those are fine then what. Always figure on the worst and hope for the best. Since you probally can not test ride it you need to be extra careful.

If the bike shifts, the cases do not need to be split, but even if they did, its a really easy job on this bike. It sounds like a easy fix, clutch cable could be stretched, push rod worn, or actuator arm worn. Im not sure what the value on your bike is, but its gotta be more than a clapped out 84 R needing some lovin. Around here, you may be able to trade the bike for a 85-86R if its a good day. Dont get me wrong, the 84 R is a great machine, im building mine right now. You dont see as many around as the other years for some reason. Sport 3 wheelers are a lot harder to find in some places in Canada. I was at Haydays last fall, and there was a Canadian man who bought a 85 R and 85 350x for $3500. They were both in ROUGH just pulled out of a grove, and been sitting for 10 years shape. There are some guys up there that would kill for something sportier than a 200s, so I see why you are considering. Good luck if you do get the bike, and post up pics if you do!

I had a near perfect 1 last year It depends on the area you live in but I could only get 650.00 for that 1.I dont think the air cooled r's are that valuable.

Looks pretty nice. You should see if you can swap the bike for both the 250r and 350x.

I would hold on to your running ride,unless its on its last leg too. Cables,brakes and clutch arent that hard to fix.With the way you describe it sounds like its been rode hard or has no maintenance. Need to check compression!!!!. If the top end needs replaced theres more $ and not worth it.Looks like a clean ride though.

FWIW - a 2002 YZ250F can easily grab 2500-3000 here in Ontario for one in decent shape. Not sure what you value a airfooler at, but judging by the pictures alone I wouldn't pay more than $2000 for that trike. I'm with the guy above - trade your bike for BOTH trikes if possible! At the very least I'd ask for cash in addition to the trike if you're going for a straight trade.

Change of plans. The 250r is out of the picture. But after a week of emailing, I think on Sunday I will trade my yz for the 350x. The owner says it runs good , always fires up 2nd or 3rd kick. Needs rear plastic and possibly exhaust. There is extra rims with it and some sort of rack. My bike is worth 2000$, so he might be getting the better deal. I have only seen 2 of these trikes for sale around here in the last 3 years. I am willing to take the hit to get the 350x. I would probably order the rear fenders right away and then ride it this season. Next winter strip it down and do it up. I am fired up, it is closest I have come to getting one of these beasts.
