Thanks man. Pry get new front and rear fenders, rear tires, grab bar, seat cover, maybe add a headlight and possibly a new tank... this one has a hole in it and it looks like somebody tried to repair it with some JB Weld. It’s for the boy so I will pry just keep the motor stock.

Yeah, will do. I would have to say the 70's are a pretty cool lil machine. The boy has a 2001 Honda xr50 dirtbike but after he saw all of us on our trikes last summer he decided he wanted one too. I asked him if he would rather have a 4 wheeler and he said no. Thats my boy!

Okay, so I started tearing into the the 70 a little bit last weekend and found that the carb has JB weld on the bottom of the bowl... Boooo!!! I looked on the web and found a couple of new carbs on ebay, anywhere from $25 to $70 bucks. I also found a rebuild kit with a new bowl and all the goodies from Beatrice Cycle for $35 bucks. (Links below)
My questions are:
Would it be better to rebuild the old carb or buy a new?
Are the cheaper carbs on ebay worth a crap?
Is there much of a difference between the $25 and the $70 no namebrand carbs?

UPDATE-
Started tearing into the 70 a little more the last few weeks. Got a rebuild kit for the carb and that did the trick, finally got it running.... but after running it for about 5 minutes I noticed oil coming from the left side case on the bottom... it leaks out pretty good and seems to stop after it is shut off and cooled a little bit. Also there does not seem to be any cracks in the case.
I did a search and found this post that sounds like what i am experiencing - http://www.3wheelerworld.com/showthread.php/141673-83-ATC-70-oil-leak?highlight=atc+70+leaking+oil
Can anyone else tell me a little more and verify what parts I will need to order to fix and is it a fairly easy fix?
?? Parts... "crank shaft seal and the large ring that wraps around the plate" ??
Trying to get it ready for my sons birthday in a week.
Thanks.

Hard to be sure until you get it apart but:
I think you need #9 and #10 in this diagram:
http://www.cheapcycleparts.com/oem-parts/honda/1982/atc70/alternator
But to get there, you'll need a flywheel puller and mayb a couple of other gaskets like #3 in this diagram:
http://www.cheapcycleparts.com/oem-parts/honda/1982/atc70/left-crankcase-cover-chain-case
You already figured the carb stuff out. I used the rebuild kit with the bowl and stuff from DR ATV too - was a lifesaver for me. I thought it was a great deal.
With the eBay carbs, you have to be careful to get one that points in the right direction - that is, the fuel inlets are on the correct side of the carb. Most of the $20 carbs are set up to face forward like on a Passport. Most of the $60 carbs are set up to face backwards like on an ATC. Other than that, I have one on my TRX70 (now 125...). It works fine.

Thanks for the info JB2!
Yeah that "save a carb kit" from DRATV was exactly what I needed and they have prices that are hard to beat! I order stuff from them all the time.
Do you know what #9 is actually called or what part it seals up? Crankshaft seal? Just want to make sure i am ordering the right part. I think its the "crank seal" on this link http://dratv.stores.yahoo.net/sise70and50.html
Can I just use an automotive type "puller" or is there a special flywheel puller for the ATC 70? Thanks again!

Yes - that's the crank seal. Part numbers are the same.
There is a special puller that fits about 99% of Honda engines as well as a bunch of others. Not my Tecates though... Costs about $10. I never used anything else to pull the flywheels but I suppose a steering wheel puller or 2 or 3 jawed puller could do the job.
Your 70 looks great. I used those same headlight brackets but I guess I mounted them upside-down:

Hey man thanks a lot for the help, I really appreciate it. I have a couple of jaw pullers, I will give them a try. I havent had time to pull the left side off so im not sure what i am in for yet. Do you have a website for that puller your talking about?
Actually, I think i like the headlight brackets the way you have them.

There are basically 2 different kinds and I'm sure DRATV has both:
- one is simply a bolt that threads into the center of the flywheel and pushes against the crank to full the flywheel off. I think this could be hard on the threads but should work.
- two is a two part 1 part that threads into the flywheel and a second the screws into the first and pushes against the crank. I like these:

Finally got some time this weekend to get the majority of the parts on… I still have to put the decals on, replace the crank seal, wire the headlight and a couple of other little things, pretty much 95% done. I would really like to get the forks painted but there will be not time before my son’s birthday.... Oh well he pry won’t even notice anyway. Here are a few pics. What have you guys done to cover the holes in headlight housing... Some kind of rubber gromets?

That's a sharp looking machine. I just picked up an 82 also; not sure what to do with it yet. I'm curious on how you make out with the oil leak. It appears that the front fender is awfully close to the head nuts at full turn, did you check how straight the backbone of the frame was? Pretty common problem on these; and easy to fix.

Thanks CoolPool. As soon as I take a look at the oil leak I will give you an update, I might try and tackle it tomorrow after work. I think the frame is ok. It looked straight when I had the tank off and the original fender had good clearance and was not scratched by the head bolts. I do see what you’re saying though... Might have to take a closer look when I get home. I did see the thread on the 70 you picked up. That’s a nice machine, love the original rear fenders. I wish mine were in that good of shape. When I got my first 70 someone had “bobbed “the rear fenders and put mud flaps on them. They are pretty trashed... But they work for now on the other 70 I picked up. That one I think is a 79 and has been beat pretty hard and has the bent frame like you are talking about, among a number of other issues. What is the trick to straightening the frame?
Here is a pic of the beat up 70... How do you guys like the custom rackseat with carpet?

Okay, so the 70 is up and running without any oil gushing from the case now. Tore the left side apart and replaced the crank seal (reason for the oil leak), stator plate o rings, left side case gasket and the pull start gasket. Got most of the final touches done. I still have the foot guards and forks to paint but pretty much done. Thanks everyone for your help and input.
