Timing cap / Rotor cap

According to the manual I need to remove this cap in order to adjust my valves. Problem is, its in there tight and someone has stripped the slot and I can't get a screwdriver to stay in. Anyone every dealt with this before? Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

I don't know why you need to remove that. I just get the machine to TDC and then adjust them.

use a quarter/nickel and some pliers, or a plug from an electrical j-box. Usually does the trick for me. What fabio says is correct though, I just remove the upper plug and wind my kicker until it is TDC

they tell you to do that so you can get a socket on the crank bolt to turn motor and get the rocker on the flat spot of the cam so you can adjust valve/ rocker clearance. since you already took the whole cover off just go ahead and do it.

if you want to get that plug removed so you dont have to pull cover off every time heres what you need to do. go to local autozone and get what i believe they call an impact driver. its about an 8" long 2" wide steel cylinder that comes with some large phillips and flathead bits. its about $10 i think. you can set it for left or right so in your case set it for left. put the big flat head bit in there and seat it in slot and turn as if you are trying to loosen it. this will seat it against edges of slot. hold the body of it firmly and strike the top with a hammer. as the hammer pushes down it will turn the bit (as long as you are holding body of it tight) this is a great tool and a must have for these bikes. it puts downward and turning pressure on fasteners at same time breaking loose seemingly impossibly stuck fasteners. works on flat and phillips screws and if you remove the black bit holder you will find a 3/8 ratchet head for sockets so you can do the same with any flange head bolt. dont use on non flange head (regular) bolts because the downward force will go to whatever its fastened to possibly breaking things.

Yeah, I don't really need to pull it out to get to TDC, but, I would like to be able to replace it with one that isn't scarred up for asthetic reasons. I have an impact driver but was worried of cracking the cover. What the hell I'll give it a shot, otherwise I'll just live with it. It's not gonna be a show trike anyway!

I was thinking the same thing. There really isn't much to those caps. I could see the impact driver going right through. Great tool to have on hand though.

ive used it on those covers before. they are stronger than you think but dont use excessive force. a little goes a long way. if you do it off bike remove the 2 gasket holder tubes so it lays flat on workbench. should have mentioned that before, sorry. i usually do it on bike. laying it on some 2x4 would work too

So I didn't bother messing with that rotor cap. I just pulled the rocker cover and sparkplug, got tdc and adjusted valves. Installed NOS shift shaft and shifter. She sounds and runs even better now. More NOS packages arriving in mail and waiting for a delivery from Captainweezy! More pics to come.

At my door today! Thanks captainweezy, shifter works better than expected and the shirt looks great, got some heads turning today as I wore it out and about! Now waiting for a fresh rebuilt carb from flyingw along with oneway bearing, brakeshoes and misc hardware from 2wheelpros.com :D

:w00t: SO my friendly mailman dropped me two boxes today. This first contained a beautifully rebuilt carb from flyingw her on the boards. I can't say enough how great this thing looks! I was able to install it today, but, unfortunately I didn't have an inline filter to install. I am certain this thing will not be as good as factory Honda, but, in fact better! Ok, the other box contained both front and rear shoes, one way bearing spare brake springs and misc hardware, all of which are oem Honda parts! Things will really be coming together soon!
