Welp... New guy here. Figured Id join and be enlightened. I have a short story and then a long list of questions.
Ten years ago I was in a motorcycle crash and (long story short) put in a wheelchair. Bought a yamaha rhino fitted with hand controls and got on with it. Now Id like to have a trail bike but I dont want to go with 4 wheels because 3 is way cooler. :) I am a hard core yamaha guy, so why stray now. I need electric start and reverse so here are the questions:
What is the largest motor yamaha made? 225DX?
can a dx be converted to a longer shaft or to a chain drive?
I can handle making a shift lever, but i dont have enough hands to have a clutch as well so i'd need the auto tranny.
Does the tri-z come stock with a clutch?
From the little amount of research i have done, I think the DX225 would be best, but what can be done to mod it without going for broke right away. If anyone has any other ideas, shoot them my way. Im open to options...
Thanks
BTW the title is my attempt at wheelchair humor... :D

Hello

Welcome to the site, I'm confused by your question. Your topic says "i brought 4 wheels though". Do you want to convert a 3 wheeler to 4 or modify a 3 with controls so you can ride it?

Thanks

Welcome. I don't know much about yamahas but there are plenty hondas that fit your description. Like the 250es/sx...

I think a yamaha 225dr would fit you best, it is shaft drive, semi auto, with reverse, the dx is almost the same just doesn't have reverse. They Are great machines. And it has electric start

Welcome to the family JD!

Best of luck in your endeavor. Can't wait to see you riding 3 wheels!

If you don't mind jumping ship, you could build an auto 200x, benefits of being light and sporty, yet semi auto like you are looking for. From my understanding everything is a 200x except the bottom end of the engine is a 200s, crank might have to be swapped? Not 100% sure.

I'm not sure how possible this is, or if anyone has tried it, but could you do a clutch if you had electric push buttons to shift, like a honda rincon? With a machine with a battery, it seems like it wouldn't be too hard to put a motor to control the shift lever with the up/down buttons from the rincon + a good relay to handle the power. You would have to hold the button for the shift, unlike the rincon which is just a tap (computer controlled).

I don't know a lot about Yamahas, but I do know the Tri-z 250 is infact a manual clutch like sports quads/three wheelers. I don't think there is an option/part interchange to make it semi auto. Also I don't think it has reverse.

I like the sound of the electronic push button shifter. If your sticking with the yamaha, then probably the 225 dr and a electronic push button shifter. It sounds pretty sweet.

I got thinking on the push button shifting, seems like the best way to do it would be a solenoid to push/pull the shifter (at what ever leverage is required). That way the internal engine spring can return the shifter to the "home" spot. A motor might not return correctly with out some way for it to stop back at home (aka computer controlled).

Someone should take this idea and build/market it :D. I know the guy next door has a hard time shifting quads/three wheelers because he has partial numbness in his left leg. I'm sure there are plenty of more people that would like it, and others just to have the aftermarket parts.

Sounds like your only option (Yamaha with electric start and reverse) is the 225DR. a member here on the boards, Derrick Adams lengthened his swingarm and drive shaft. It can be done.

As others have stated, Honda made the ATC250ES and ATC250SX, both of those models have exactly what you are looking for and are much more easy to find (and find parts for).

EDIT - I see you bought one - very nice trike! Rock on!

That is a great find, I hope you enjoy it. If you need any help or questions with it, just put up a thread and you'll get all the help you need. It looks really clean too!

I started to go through it last night and it is pretty clean. There are a few issues. The idle jet was stripped out so im in the middle of trying to get that out. Couple other rubber and plastic issues, but pretty minor. Where is the best location to get used parts for these? Also, is there a good headlight upgrade?

Ebay is another fair source to watch.

Yeah ^ your best bet is to get the carb and the bigger things off eBay, because some of those sites cost a fortune for parts

Got going on the new foot plates. i need them to keep my feet where they belong. they would be all over with just the pegs. i also got into the carb because it was leaking out of the overflow i think. the idle jet got all messed up when someone tried to take it out. now im in the middle of trying to get it out but its not looking good. might need a new carb body.

"Foot pegs" are looking good, looks to be a dual purpose, should work well for a nerf bar too.

I have to do a carb rebuild next week. Can anyone tell me where to get a service manual for one of these monsters?

I have 2 manuals labeled as "Yamaha YTM 225" under my 3 wheelers folder, so I suspect one might cover your model, I don't have them downloaded atm.

This is gonna be very cool to watch! I love the foot mounts. Jockey shift is sweet too. This thing is gonna be awesome!

Only problem I see is if you have to go down a hill and take a turn at the same time, that thing can tip over. Ive done it a few times on my 225dx. I mean.. If you keep on the throttle, and whip the rear end out, you can avoid it. I have had to put my foot down to keep it from going over a few times. So be careful.

Wow, wasn't excepting a linkage setup that heavy dusty, it shalt never break lol.

Just wondering, are you going to add some sort of strap for your feet, or do you think the high sides of the foot pegs will be enough? I guess it really depends how fast and hard your planning on riding.

Kind of an interesting idea. I'm sure your not the only person in a wheelchair that wants to ride atvs, so I bet there might be a small market for custom fitted kits to make atvs 100% hand controlled.

It looks cool now that it's done but it was a PAIN IN THE --- to get it figured out. No moving on to the carb and lighting. I also need a new front light plastic if anyone has one. also looking for a seat in any condition. I just need the pan. Is there anyone that can tell me the carb settings? I can get it back together, but im not sure what everythign needs to be set at (jets, air screws, etc).

Anyone know how big of a head light i can get away with on this thing. The stock bulb is 45 / 45w so its 45 watts on the high and low beam. I going to retrofit a new headlight and im finding a lot of 45/65 options. can the stator and wiring handle 65 watts on this?
Thanks, Jason

05-15-2013, 11:13 AM
If you want to put a non-standard head light on it, you could go LED, the 27W led lights on ebay work well and are really bright, I would suggest getting spot instead of flood though, the spot floods quite a lot as well lol. It might only be 27W but it puts out as much light as probably 100W light or more. Down side, no dim/bright setting, just on/off.

Well, i got it going last night. The carb needed a cleaning. it was pretty bad, but nothing like the mouse house i found in the air box! it was packed full of grass clippings. Went to get a new filter and they ordered the wrong part. so i just bought one for a grizzly (i think) and trimmed it down. worked great. Put a new plug in it too. http://i1231.photobucket.com/albums/ee518/jmd8203/YAMAHA%20225DR/0513193916_zpsa2ef531b.jpg (http://s1231.photobucket.com/user/jmd8203/media/YAMAHA%20225DR/0513193916_zpsa2ef531b.jpg.html)I had to take 2 carbs and make one good one. Worked well except i guess i put the dirty low speed jet in it. :) had to take it all back apart to get it to start. Runs great now! the shifter works well too. I kinda adds a little excitement when you are slamming throught the gears driving one handed. im looking into doing a headlight mod. Going to try and make this bulb fit the current light fixture.

http://www.bulbs.com/espec.aspx?ID=10646&CAWELAID=1706526008&cm_mmc=GooglePLA-_-NonBrand-_-none-_-&AffID=6&device=c&network=g&matchtype=

i want to stay at or below 45watts because thats what the stocker is. Ill keep you posted on that. i also put an LED bulb in the tail light for a little added light. I might swap the wires around so the bulb lights up like it was in the brake light mode. Thats all for now... more next week.
