Ok, so, like the title says. I have a late 85/86 big red 250es. My kicker was occasionally slipping and when I shut down engine I would hear the famous whirling sound. So I order a honda one way bearing new and installed it. When I first got i back together it kicked over hard nd kicker would not return. So I loosened a couple of the rigjt hand case bolts in orfer to disassemble it again nd noticed the kicker returned to its nuetral position on its own. So I kicked it over and it kicked hard but returned as it should. I shut down try kicking it again. Returned. I let it warm up nd took for a run down the road. When I retirned and put it nutral to park I noticed a tapping sound from the area of the oil pump/ centrifugal clutch area. I shut it down and heard the whirling sound again. The kicker doesn't slip. Any insight? I've been dumping money into this rig and would love to get it running proper. Thanks in advance for any help.

Did you install the one-clutch correctly? There is a in and a out side to it.

Well, I thaought i did. I was under the impression that the motor wouldn't kick over if the one way clutch was backwards. Guess I'll be tearing down and trying again.

So i pulled the cover back off and found that centrifugal cluth had loosened up. The nut was finger loose. I know thats why i was hearing tapping from that area. I pulled the clutch and checked the sprag and found it to be correct. I know the loose clutch was the reason for the tapping, but, could that be the reason for the whirling sound? I suspect so. Also, to answer this for future newb readers. If you put the one way clutch(also called a sprag clutch or one way bearing) in backwards the engine will NOT turn over with kick started. I installe the sprag backwards intentionally to test this.
I would appreciate any response as to other causes for an occasional whirlling sound when shutting engine down BESIDES a bad sprag clutch/bearing. Thank you

I have an 81 200 that when you shut it off the flywheel spins for a few sec then stops, but makes a whirling type sound then a tink sound when it actually stops
