I recently swapped engines on my 85 250sx. I noticed that there were numbers hand written on the top of the head near the top mounting bolt. I thought it was something someone had written that had once serviced the engine, but then I took out the other engine it had them also. different numbers, but same handwritten idea. anyone know what these are? 166102

I think it was just their way of keeping track on production numbers or who assembled it and or when?

From used to crate motors, they all have them..........

Try them on KENO and see how you make out :D

They all have/had it. They are Quality Assurance final assembly and test marks for the motor.

Nice. Thanks flying. Good to know boys. now, to test the depths of knowledge of this site. does anyone know the significance of the numbers? is it like the "inspected by number 5" tag in my coat pocket? or is it something else? area of the country imported to? something totally different? this engine says P277. the other is different, but i can't remember what. was it put on during assembly here in the US? must have been, right?

One would think that the number is unique to an inspector therefore you would see some numbers repeat they dont. I have seen this kind of mark on other Honda motors but not all. The motors were actually built by a Honda vendor and delivered to the Honda factory for assembly. Perhaps the SX motors built by Japanese company X had a production process and this is their QA mark as part of their production process.

Just to confirm, I have a 85 or 86 250es with the same markings on the top of the engine as well as on the head. I thought they were from a junk yard or something lol.
