We all make mistakes and this is my biggest one! Today me and my buddy decided to do some riding so i took out my quad. I have everything My insurance, proof i took my course(Im only 15). But my dad never did the regisration for 2013.. Me being the kid i am, im just like w.e. i wont get stopped today. Well we went out for a while then we came up to a road stop and boom a cop pulls out in front of us:/.. So we got off and were nice a polite. He asked for everything but i didnt have the registration.. So he asked if i had a truck that could come take it home and i said my dads trucks not on the road right now so he said its getting towed... I wish i would have just said i could call one of my buddies dads. Were only a mile away from my house so i had my mom come and he wrote the ticket in her name because i dont have a state ID. Were going to get the registration tomorrow and picking it up becuase its $150 towing fee and $20 a day to keep it at the garage.. Sucky day though.

Yep, NY doesn't mess around when it comes to stuff like that...

Stinks it's going to cost you so much for not renewing a $14 registration.... But them's the rules I guess...

I dont know alot of people that title or register their bikes. I know a few people that have close to 2 dozen bikes each, can you imagine the property tax on that many machines?! not to say we shouldnt be paying it, i just dont agree with having to pay to have them beyond simply purchasing them!

That sucks, but you learned your lesson. Thats why i always tell guys here to get the darn thing registered.

Just the other day i was riding around, we have a city permit here so we can ride anywhere, i got home came across my back yard and up into my driveway and there was the city cop looking for me. I was like wtf is up here. He said they had a driving complaint on a three wheeler, funny thing is there is a 83 200E here in town that the owner likes to raise hell with and doesn't have it registered and people always mistake mine for his, anyway he looks at mine sees the plate and registration and city permit on the back and says ok your good to go just be safe. I know darn well it was the other guy again. And i bet you the cop went back to the person that filed the complaint once again and asked if it had a license plate on the back, which again will be answered as no, and then he will go warn the other guy once again... LOL

I wish he would ticket that other guy to the point that he wanted to sell it, then i would buy it and register it.. HA!

I may not be correct, but I don't think an un-registered ATV ticket is points on a license.. I could be wrong though....

Damn, you people have it rough. In canada, ( ontario anyway ) you register it when you buy it, for 13% of purchase price, buy a 15 dollar plate, and you're good for life.

Mn is no registration.... Some here do, but I've got it in writing from county and city PD, and from DNR headquarters in writing..... And I carry those with just in case I run into a super cop that wants to challenge me.

Holy moly.. Well i woke up this morning and me and my dad went and got the quad. costs 189$ to get it back and we still have the court date for the ticket. I went riding today again.. i kinda hoped id get pulled over by the same cop just to rub it in his face that it didn't even phase me lol. But now shes all registered and junk and ill be riding safely. But i do have another question. I ride my zinger alot on the trail but its not registered or nothing. I have no title cause i just bought it of a guy on craigslist. Should i try and get a title and register it? isnt there a law that 50cc and under dont need one or something? I live in NY btw cause ii know laws vary in states.

RIDE-RED 250r
04-02-2013, 06:45 PM
The Zinger is classified as an ATV and most likely falls into the registration requirement. Besides, a Zinger is 60cc isn't it??

I have never heard of a registration expemtion for anything under 50cc in any category..

spentar
04-02-2013, 07:06 PM
Well i guess in some states scooters under 50cc dont need a registration but if that was the case id just tell the cop my zingers a 50cc... close enough lol

I only register a select few that would ever be ridden at an ATV park or out of state. The rest I only ride on my own property.

In NY you need to register almost anything. Some smaller machine (50's) can be considered 'motor assisted' cycles. A few local people have them in town, bicycles with small motors. Depending on size and speed they still need the paper work.
As for tickets, the point do go one you're license. Brother was pulled over on a quad, 3 tickets, almost lost his license. Judge dropped a lot of it down being that he was hauling wood (not hot dogging around) but the points went on like an average motor vehicle.

Interesting. I've never heard of a "City Permit" for an ATV. You're out in the middle of BFEgypt Minnesota ainchya?

From the MN DNR Off Highway Vehicle regs:

ATV collector use registration:

• ATVs 25 years and older are exempt from registration if they were
originally produced as a separate, identifiable make by a manufacturer.

• ATVs 25 years and older MAY be registered for unlimited use.
This registration is non-transferable

I live in a village and the cop shop is kitty corner from me. I have insurance and registration on two of my trikes.A couple years ago I rode over to a friends house a few blocks from me . I met two state troopers a sheriff and town cop on the way. One gave me the eye other three waved.A few years ago a village cop and DEC officer came to my house and questioned me about riding up and down the street .I told them it wasnt me I saw the quads that where doing the riding and told them that it was quads not three wheelers and the quads werent even red. The DEC officer says there all the same to me.I told them that my trikes hadent been out of the garage in weeks and I didnt ride on the streets because at that time you couldnt ride in town.

My father once said this to me and it holds true:

"When your young you will make dollar mistakes,
a bit older you will make tens of dollar mistakes,
a little older you'll make hundreds of dollars in mistakes,
and when your my age you'll make thousands of dollars of mistakes."

I didn't think there was. I'll have to dig around for it.

Interesting what they see.
I was coming back from buying a Honda (red) trike and got pulled over.
They were looking for a stolen quad. Polaris, they said..

All we have in Oregon is off road permit stickers.
Used to be a DMV registration.
We had a member from Montana? register his machines in Oregon because whatever state he lived in, had NO kind of paper trail and he wanted SOMEthing at least.

Interesting. I've never heard of a "City Permit" for an ATV. You're out in the middle of BFEgypt Minnesota ainchya?

Not really, its a cluster of small towns down here, i wouldnt call the area sparse or backwoods or BFE.. LOL.. But good explanation.

The city voted to allow permitting of ATV's within the city limits, it passed, cost is $20 for a permit sticker and you can ride it wherever you want. I ride it down to the grocery store, right up the front of the stores, putter around to get the mail and run to the post office, etc. Its nice, i can hop on here and leave home and go wherever i want. However, we are required to register, collector or not to get the city permit you must register and insure it. I have basic liability insurance on it that costs me $30 a year, the registration cost me $45, and the permit cost me $20, annual cost is actually $50 since the DNR is a three year registration. I will gladly pay that so i can ride it instead of trailer it everywhere.

I know the MN DNR regs quite well, i can quote them from memory. But down here you will be hard pressed to get by with the collector excuse. They hand tickets out like candy in a parade. The other problem is despite the MN DNR regs the counties have their own regs, and all the cities do as well! So you really got to be on your toes. While the MN DNR says collector no reg needed here the county says you cant be on public property unless its registered. So you can ride on your own property but you cant set a single tire on public or county property unless registered. Also the ATV trails, which are few down here, require registration for riding as well. So your kinda screwed either way and might as well register... LOL

I have argued it at council meetings, in court on behalf of friends that got ticketed, but the books show what they show, and there ain't no getting around it.

Oh we also have golf cart permits, you can buzz around on them to.. LOL

If its a DNR trail yes, but there is some trails that are not DNR. Anxious to see if this one offroad lake trail down here will happen, if it does it will be a collaboration of private property owners, not the DNR. I live in Lincoln county, just a stones throw from SD. Ditches are a WHOLE different story. They are considered public right of way and we even have a season we cant ride in them due to nesting birds, pheasants mainly. Its rule weirdness down here, but i ain't arguing. I don't really mind registering it and paying for that along with a permit when it means i can ride it anywhere and anytime i want. How many of you can ride it to the gas station and buy a pop and wave as the cop goes by? The only thing i cant do is ride on state highways.

Lewis County in conjunction with several townships up in the Tug Hill region in northern NY has opened ALOT of seasonal gravel roads to registered and insured ATV's. And in an effort to create a contigious trail system some paved town and county roads are open as well. They have to open each road specifically through the town councils and county legislature but they are chugging right along at it! :) They are very friendly to regostered and insured ATV riders up there. They also have what I call "goat trails" that run on private property and county forest lands. These are official designated trails and you need to purchase a special permit to ride them, but it's well worth it, especially when the money goes directly into the trail system 100%. Thats where I do all my riding. :)

See i should just change my location lol, see when i say buffalo i mean that whole region. like all of Western NY. I live in a small town called pendleton, my situations nice because i live 4 houses away from a series of bikepath/ dirt trails that are aloud for atvs that go pretty far in two directions. During the winter the Shawnee Snow Chiefs own the trails for snowmobiles only and those connect to alot more extensive trail systems. But its cool being able to wake up on a summer day and go riding as soon as the engine kick over:D.

In my area of Michigan and most cities north of me you can with 4 wheels and an ORV, sadly the law in my county is a bit gray with 3 wheelers. They call out "ATVs" as being allowed, but "3 wheeled vehicles" as not being allowed. Question is... is a 3 wheeler counted as an ATV (is in my book), or a 3 wheeled vehicle (like a motorcycle trike for the road in my book). I'll have to talk with someone in the county and get it in writing if I'm allowed ^.^. Could throw on a 4th tire as a wheelie stopper :D.

Luckily here the regs say "an off road vehicle on three low pressure tires or more but less than six" so three wheelers are lumped into the ATV classification with quads. The main thing the city didn't want was dirt bikes buzzing around so they eliminated all two wheelers from the permit process. Too bad because i know a guy with a BW200 that i could have had fun with... LOL

You're absolutely right. NY state storm-troopers, LOVE to harass regular, everyday people and treat them as guilty until proven innocent for sure. And you're not able to prove yourself innocent, the courts just offer to plea traffic citations down to non moving violations so they can collect revenue.

Don't get too carried away with the cop bashing please, either one of ya. The vast majority are just doing the job they were hired to do.

Don't want to get tickets?? Don't do anything illegal! It's that simple. Don't blame the troopers....

Judges, some are more reasonable than others, I'll give ya that. But you will get that in ANY state.
