View Full Version : How much power does a coil really suck up?

im restoring my 85 T3 from the ground up,and i like to do a lot of night riding,i was told to have the lighting coil removed from my stator,i was told if its gone u gain A LOT of power,is this true?,cause if it doesent suck much up i would really like to keep it so i can run lights,i DONT wanna run battery powered ones!,any help would be appreciated,thanks! -D

i woudnt think it realy sucks that much power up if i were you id keep it on the beast because it sux major ass when a bunch of your riding buddys want to go for a night cruze and you can go because you have no lights.
I think that's a load of crap. The crankshaft doesn't drive it or anything, just the flywheel passes over the coil and does stuff with magnets....maybe it does? I dunno.....

i know they are way different but if you have ever been in a plow truck and you go to rais the plow it will actualy bog the engine down because the alternated is demanding so much current it might actualy a simuler situation on trikes as well but if the head lights arnt on then i dont see how there would be a power loss.

The coil does not USE any power. It creates electrical current with the magnets passing over it. The lights draw the power, which is why they have a separate coil to create it instead of drawing off the coil that creates your spark.
