This was a 4bag cement mixer with wooden wheels; My great great grandfathers. It had whats called a hit or miss engine. They tried a few days ago (too heavy) and I should have moved it.

So, knowing it wouldn't roll far, I went to the scrapyard within 2 miles and the kid hung his head low as I explained it was a family heirloom. He told me they filled the bin today and it's on the way to china.

Good news, I picked the right scrapyard; They got his name off his license and the owner will have a video for me tomorrow. They gave him 100$ for the mixer and a whole load of metal in his truck. He is banned from the scrapyard and I'll have him arrested tomorrow.

USELESS THIEVES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That's good you got another bad guy off the streets, a couple days my brother was tarping a roof for his job, and a guy ran over to him hit him of his latter and started swigging his hammer at his head and said I'm gonna f###ing kill you, luckily my brother dodged all of his swings and calls the cops and the guy ran, so my brother has to file a police report and then that guy is goin to jail. Just proves there are alot of crazy people out their

So sorry.
That's just sad. LOVE those hit and miss engines.

I had a guy looking at a 40 ton jack and told him I NEED it to jack up the house.

When I walked back to the barn, it was gone
but
he left 2 dollars on the ground so technically didn't steal it?

Thanks you guys, I'll have to put a value on it....

Dad use to bring it to tractor shows and they all shared stories.

The F'N thing is gone forever. Aren't scrapyards suppose to hold scrap for 48 hours due to thieves??

You should take the kid and stuff him in a cement mixer!!! It's bad around here too, people are going into houses and stealing all of the copper plumbing and wiring. Last fall a family went on vacation and came home to their house stripped of the aluminum siding, the neighbors just thought they were getting new siding put on while on vacation.

Thats really surprising the scrapyard tossed it in the bin, they must be a bunch of numbnuts... Around here something like a hit/miss engine shows up and its like friggin gold how it gets treated. The scrapyards here know the collector value of them, they are antiques that sell for FAR FAR more than scrap!

Sorry to hear about your loss, at least you got the scumbag dead to rights!

Make SURE when you press charges that you EMPHASIZE that you want to file for Trespassing as well as Theft, was it in a building? Even if the door was wide open around here they would also charge him for breaking and entering. Don't let him just get a theft charge, because he sold it for $100 and it would be petty theft and the dude would get off on probation and maybe restitution, add the other charges to make it stick!

That right there is what makes something like that priceless! I know exactly what you are feeling right now.....Nail the little creep to the wall DC!

^^ No, I had restored that engine a couple years back. This will be grand larceny for 2 people.

I just never thought no one would even bother with it. It had no hitch at all and they just chained it around a ball hitch. I don't want to tell my father this at all.

This was all from Canada along with a 56 Ford Thunderbird that is in my name.

Everyone is desperate for 1$ but you don't need to steal it!

It is sad world these days. What you cherish means nothing more than a quick buck to these scumbags.Maybe if they would get some serious jail time.Things would be different.Cops don't like it when you mention taking the law into your own hands.Problem is they don't want to deal with the scumbags either. You better build a big safe for your tools and trikes.Truly sorry for your loss.Probally the scrap yard sold it.

I question why the guy at the scrapyard had his head hung down low; Almost like if he had or wanted to, he could get it back.

This stealing is out of control................

I'm so sorry to hear it man! Even more I'm surprised they scraped it! Any idiot should have been able to look at that and know it shouldn't be melted down. It makes me think the guy at the scrap yard KNEW it was stolen!!!!

I would have the cops put some heavy pressure on the kid at the scrap yard. Threaten to hang it all on him or something. I'd almost be willing to be he knows the guy, or at least knows more then he is telling. People don't look guilty or ashamed unless they are.

I have to agree with everyone here, the scrap yard guy has to know something. Probably kept it himself and now knows its stolen and does not want it taken back and him out of $100. Because he wont get anything back, it was stolen.

We have his name and truck on video so I may pressure the owner a bit but I believe it is gone........

Here in WI it's a crime to accept stolen goods whether you know they are stolen or not.

It's a hefty fine too. But if that scrap yard is dirty. The word needs to get out and make it harder for criminals to move stolen goods.

Edit: just looked at the local CL for reference. Hit & Miss engines are going for $2K to $4K. There is one for $300.

Well if it was me i could care less about what kind of dollars its worth, its a family heirloom and has sentimental value. I would just want justice and the truth.

I have aluminum staging at my home, 40' 30' 20' 10' step aluminum ladders. They are not easily seen but I'm sure one day those will be gone.

Waited to speak with a police officer and he and I raced BMX when we were kids so that made things easy. He said that scrapyard lets stolen goods in all the time and the police are there often.

That kid at the scrapyard sounds too guilty, and i doubt they were dumb enough to scrap it, i bet they either have it stashed or re-sold it for more than scrap value. If you had it restored and it wasnt just a big chunk of rust i can't see a scrapyard junking it. Lean on him HARD...

I just drove by the officer working on this. Fortunately he knows me so he shot the chit with my while on his detail. I had just left another apartment house and a guy said " I know Earl Reynolds ", let me call my wife. She knew him and called him. He claimed "DOUGY" his brother asked him for help because I GAVE IT TO HIM!!
So Earl was the only one with an ID and claimed he wasn't at fault. The officer told me he'll have charges for theft of the scrapyard for 118$ that wasn't his and grand larceny for the theft at my apartment house. He said tell the guy to come see me tomorrow and I won't arrest him but I will charge him. Dougy just got out of jail so he'll likely go back in. If anyone finds more links to hit and miss motors for sale, please pass them along to me so I can prove a value. Thank you all!!!!

Sounds to me like the scrapper is in on the deal. NOBODY would scrap out an old piece like that IF there wasn't something in it for them.

Hey Steve, anything ever come of this?

Dirtcrasher
07-11-2013, 01:44 AM
I gotta go see the cop and see whats up. He said he had enough without me but what about restitution??

I won't say anything bad about the PO because some are my friends and take their job seriously; I imagine he charged the guy and got him back in jail. .25c an hour won't cover restitution........

Dirtcrasher

Update, got it in the mail. He has a pretrial hearing that I can appear at and explain this family heirloom and it's value.

The asked what I wanted this case to result in; I said I'd like restitution (whether he has a job or not) and I said that I was unaware of his criminal past but placing him in a corrections facility would only cost the taxpayers money and allow him to have a free room, free meals, the ability to workout and so forth and I left that for the judge to make that decision.......

Even 20$ a month for the next 20 years is fine be me and they will arrest him each time and be brought into court if he misses payments. One of my apartments is 200' away from the Taunton District Court so it's chicken for me to show up and make this guy uncomfortable for years to come.

I'm also glad that this will be on his record for future negative thoughts from perspective employers and such.

I'll keep you guys informed :D
