Hi there, name is Pat. I just picked up an 85/86 ATC350X this past Saturday. It was in a fire at some point in it's life, and has been sitting outside, on the back of an old truck for atleast 6 years. Engine was seize and frame is trash (subframe atelast). Forks are there, but, need a rebuild. Got the engine apart Monday night. Piston was almost at BDC and the cylinder had an 1/8" line of rust keeping it there. Got it all apart to find only some surface rust on a perfect crank, a trans that goes in and out of every gear, rotates like new and makes no funny noises and has no roughness in it. Rod and bearing are awesome, cylinder head is spotless, cam journals are excellent, and you can see a lil crosshatch on the cylinder. Flywheel is rusted to death, but, that's a super easy fix.
I'm friends with another new member here, Mudbug, and I have been directed here doing Google searches multiple times. It's about time that I kept a 3 wheeler and joined, instead of selling them to complete other projects! lol. Any help on a frame for this X would be much appreciated. Would like to keep in on 3 wheels. I'm not afraid to weld the front of the old frame to something else to do it. Thanks in advance, it's good to be here!

Keep your eyes open, 350X frames pop up quite often and pretty cheap. Of course u could always try to make it to trikefest, always plenty for sale there.

hey welcome to the board! where is the frame actually messed up at? you do know they have issues with cracking as it is right? A member actually just posted up on here with his fix to a 350X frame, he made a youtube video out of it lol. Anyhow, sounds like you know what you're doing inside that motor, just do some more searches to see about fixes to the 350X frames there have been alot of people working on em!

I was talking with Pat yesterday and by the sounds of it the frame is way beyond repair. Like he said it was in a fire of some sort so all the paint had been stripped and then was just left out the elements and has rusted pretty bad from what he told me. He is pretty sure that after he sand blasts it the frame will be pretty thin where the worst of the rust set in. We have been talking about him doing the 350rx conversion and i'm pretty sure thats what he is set on for now?

Frame isn't cracked (that I've found anyway). It's just paper thin, like Levi said. Has many broken fasteners, and lots of rust. Matter of fact, there are rust chunks falling out of the upper center tube. No way I wanna use it. I did read about them breaking, and that is one of the reasons why I don't wanna trust this sucker. I've had a hell of a time finding another X frame in my area. I can't even find a 300ex or 250x frame. I really want to keep it on 3 wheels, though. I have some pics, just need to get em on photo bucket so I can post em. Going to try splitting the cases tonight. The rear lower bolt is frozen in the case, and I had to cut the one motor mount tab off the frame to get the engine out. I've done a couple of my trx300fw engines before. Basically the same design, only 2 valve.

Keysville huh...I'm originally from Amelia, but stationed down here at Cape Canaveral in the AF...I'll be headed back up there to pick my brother up on the way to trikefest...is there anything else you need for that trike? I have alot of parts, but unfortunately not a frame...keep checking ebay, it'll pop up...in the meantime you can gather up other parts...you're gonna love the X, it's a beast....welcome to the site!

Yup, I've been there many times. Don't hold it against me, but, I'm originally from Jersey. If you choose not to help me out now that you know that, I won't hold it against you! Lol. I need a wiring harness, cdi, stator, and flywheel at the moment. I'm not too sure what all I will need chassis wise just yet. Have to find a frame and figure out what I wanna do. The plan is to do a Powroll 86mm big bore, new valves, shortened bronze guides, 420 lift cam, P&P, my own true duals, 39mm FCR... I'm a nut. Haha. I was going to do the 350x to 300ex swap a couple of years ago, but, fell in love with my buds 88 Warrior, so I managed to track one down. And, now that I've made that one modded SOB, it's time to move on. I'll post pics of the engine in a short short.

The crank has all the rust on it. There is a tiny bit on the balancer, but, it's barely anything. ALL BEARINGS ARE TIGHT, SMOOTH, AND RUST FREE! I'm going to clean it out really well, re-oil the bearings, and put er back together. The rust is coming off with the wipe of my hand. All gears are good, shifts well, forks are tight, clutch basket has no grooving... Even the cam journals are spotless.

I just remebered, I got an 87 200x frame with this as well. Has forks, triple tree, swinger, carrier and axle. Swinger needs major work, probably filled with water and it broke the tube open. Rest of the frame(with harness) looks to be good.

Rappyse, I'll keep that in mind. I don't get out that way often. Mostly I hop in 95 to get to Jersey.
It's not too bad, ghost. I have a complete gasket kit on the way, flywheel, clutch kit, and timing chain, too. I also, got a deal on a 300ex frame off ebay. I'm going to see what it will take to put the X front end on the EX. Should be pretty damn close. About how much does it cost to rebuild forks? Have never had to do it. Been building a arms though! lol

Forks are not that bad to rebuild you can buy a seal kit and new fluid. I plan on putting progressive springs in mine. Any way it costs less to rebuild forks then it does to buy arms.
